ASU women place seventh
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Maggie Kimani placed seventh individually to lead Arkansas State’s women to a seventh-place team finish in the Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday. Kimani ran the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 48.09 seconds to place seventh, 1:21 behind winner Janet Jesang of Western Kentucky. It was Jesang’s second straight Sun Belt title. WKU won the women’s team title, followed by Middle Tennessee State, Arkansas-Little Rock, North Texas, South Alabama, Florida Atlantic, ASU, Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida International and Louisiana-Monroe. WKU also won the men’s title and was followed by UALR, MTSU, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy, FAU, FIU, ULM, ULL and ASU. USA’s Micah Tirop also repeated as the men’s individual champ, crossing the finish line of the 8K race in 24:47.35. Sydney Foreman finished 26th for the ASU women with a time of 19:59.88, while Dawn L’Heureux was 33rd (20:21.32), Mary Edwards 49th (21:20.50), Chelsea Weaver 51st (21:49.97), Staci Papageorge 55th (22:12.92) and Mary Krug 58th (22:31.08). James Ngwiri posted the top finish for the ASU men, placing 15th in 26:13.66. Henry Ndichu was 28th (27:09.79), Terell Pigram 58th (28:53.62), Derell Pigram 66th (29:53.70), Rusty Staggs 74th (33:50.27) and Johnathan Martin 76th (35:26.73).
Lyon knocks off WBC men
WALNUT RIDGE — Alex Kelly scored 21 points to lead Lyon College to a 78-70 win over Williams Baptist College in men’s basketball on Saturday. Lyon (1-0) led 40-28 at halftime. Jermaine Templeton scored a game-high 22 points for WBC (0-2), while Marcus Massey added 19 points.
WBC sweeps past Stephens College
WALNUT RIDGE — Williams Baptist College swept a volleyball doubleheader from Stephens College on Saturday. The Lady Eagles won the first match 25-20, 25-13, 25-16, and the second match 25-15, 25-7, 25-16. Stephanie Hart hammered 22 kills and also had three blocks and five aces for WBC (24-10, 7-9 American Midwest Conference), which was playing its regular-season home finale. Megan Tompkins added 15 kills and two blocks, while Laura Jardeen had 56 digs, Casey Jo Schatzley 38 assists and three service aces, and Jodi Stepp 21 assists and five aces.
Lyon sweeps on senior day
BATESVILLE — Nine kills and four blocks from middle hitter Katie Beineke of Jonesboro helped Lyon College to a 3-0 sweep of Mid Continent on Saturday. Lyon improved to 17-10 overall and 8-6 in TranSouth Conference play. Mid-Continent fell to 0-24 and 0-14. Leah Eifling had 15 assists and nine digs, while Ann Sullivan earned nine digs and six kills in each player’s final regular-season home match. Lyon also got eight kills from Chelsea Hinton and 17 assists from Julie Arnold.
Nettleton teams run at Cabot
CABOT — Nettleton’s junior high cross country teams wrapped up their season in a meet at Cabot on Saturday. Mikala Groves’ 46th-place finish in the junior girls’ division was Nettleton’s best finish of the day. Groves completed the 2-mile course in 15:07, while teammate Anna Gage was 60th in 15:40. Lane Cohn’s 82nd-place finish was the top for Nettleton’s boys. He finished in 13:57, while Jacob Carter was 116th in 14:51.
Riverside, Bay claim titles
MARMADUKE — Riverside’s boys and Buffalo Island Central’s girls took home top honors at the MARMADUKE Invitational junior high basketball tournament on Saturday. Riverside beat Bay 55-51 in overtime in the boys’ final, while BIC whipped host MARMADUKE 46-26 in the girls’ final. Riverside won its sixth MARMADUKE Invitational title in seven years and its third straight. Cole Winford led the Rebels with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Morgan Fletcher scored 14, Logan Meeurer 11 and Cody Williams 10. Dylen Loven scored 15, Damien Holt 14 and Tristen Shelly 11 for Bay. Demi Hargrove scored 14 points and Brittany Fowler had 11 for BIC.
Elks leather program continues
JONESBORO — Jonesboro Elks 498 is once again participating in the Elks Veterans Leather Program. Elks lodges across the United States collect deer hides that are then prepared and shipped to a tannery to be converted into leather for use by veterans. The Jonesboro lodge began accepting deer hides on Saturday and will continue to do so through Jan. 2. There will be two receptacles marked “deer hides” located near the front entrance of the Jonesboro Lodge located at 2113 W. Washington Ave. Area hunters wishing to donate hides should place the hides (minus head, hooves, etc.) in a garbage bag and place the bag in the designated receptacles. Hunters may also drop off hides at Highland, Mountain Home and Searcy Elks lodges. For more information regarding the Elks Leather Program, contact the lodge office at 932-0350.
