Cause of fire reportedly drug-related
JONESBORO — After leaving 15 pounds of suspected marijuana near a hot water heater, someone may be in legal hot water, Jonesboro police said.
Lt. Rick Elliott said police went to 2200 Belt St., Apt. 7, around 11:30 p.m. Friday on a report of a house fire.
Elliott said Jonesboro firefighters helped to put out the blaze, but found something near the gas water heater inside a closet in the living room.
“The source of the fire was due to a black plastic bag that was full of a green, leafy substance that is believed to be marijuana,” Elliott said.
Police believe the bag had been placed on top of the water heater, covering the vent. The bag and alleged marijuana then ignited, Elliott said.
Elliott said police later searched the home and found additional drugs, scales and a gun. As of Sunday night, no arrests had been made, police said.

Student allegedly has knife at school
JONESBORO — A 12-year-old student at Nettleton Middle School allegedly brought a switchblade knife to school Friday, Jonesboro police said.
Officer Russ Manning said Carmen White, a teacher at the school, showed him the knife that had been removed from the 12-year-old’s jacket. White said she was told about the knife by another student.
“White said the suspect asked her not to tell because the knife was his grandmother’s,” Manning said. “White told him she had to tell.”
Manning said he, White and middle school principal Sandy McCall also spoke to the child.
“He was asked by McCall why he brought the knife. The suspect told us he brought it home from his grandmother’s on Thursday and he had forgot that it was in his jacket,” Manning said. “The suspect told us that he did not bring the knife to hurt anyone. When asked if he forgot that he had the knife, why was he showing it to other students? The suspect could not give us an answer to the question.”
The child was cited to juvenile authorities and turned over to a parent’s custody, Manning said.

Counterfeit currency reported at store
JONESBORO — Police are investigating how a counterfeit $20 bill ended up at a local store Saturday.
Officer Morshaydrick Racy said he went to Kmart, 2010 South Caraway Road, around 9 a.m. Sunday. He spoke to store employee John Weems, who said he found a counterfeit $20 bill while he was counting the night’s deposit.
The bill showed as a real $20 when Weems used a counterfeit marking pen, but Racy said the paper felt softer than usual, which may have caused the false reaction.
Police believe the counterfeit bill was passed between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday.

Man suspected of Blytheville assault
BLYTHEVILLE — A 30-year-old man faces a probable cause hearing today after he was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of assault, Blytheville Assistant Police Chief Marvin Crawford said.
Scott Davis, no address available, was arrested around noon after police went to 1598 South Division St. around 8:35 a.m. in response to a call from Davis’ mother, Dell Davis.

Crawford said Dell Davis had already left the home before police arrived, noting Scott Davis was inside the home with the 10-year-old. Police tried to communicate with Davis, using a phone, a loudspeaker and other means, Crawford said.
The 10-year-old was later able to leave the home unharmed, Crawford said.
