Con man takes church money jar

JONESBORO — A thief targeted a Jonesboro church around 6 p.m. Thursday and not only made off with a “money jar” but conned a person who was at the church for band practice out of $20, police said.

Officer Billy Croom said he was called to Crossroads Ministry, 1845 Grant Ave., after report of an intruder.

Phillip Weese and Michael Stacy told the officer that Stacy had heard someone moving around in the church foyer. The men found a black man, 30-35 years of age, who was behaving nervously, police said.

Croom said Weese told him the man asked for $60. Weese gave him $20, the officer said, and the man left after Weese and Stacy talked to him a few minutes.

It was at that time that Weese and Stacy noticed the jar containing a few dollars was empty. The jar and money were there on the “honor system,” the men told the officer.
