Johnnie T. Andrews

WALNUT RIDGE — Johnnie Theodore Andrews, 61, of Walnut Ridge passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Walnut Ridge, son of Johnnie and Charlene Noblin Andrews. He was a lifetime resident and farmer in Lawrence County and member of the Light Church of Christ. He was united in marriage to Kathy Whitmire on March 7, 1969.

He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Peggy Dacus.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of the home; two sons, John and Kim Andrews and Jason and Charity Andrews, all of Walnut Ridge; mother, Charlene Andrews of Walnut Ridge; sister, Patsy Gwaltney of Hardy; six grandchildren, Tyler, Hayden, Savannah, Jacie, Zoey and Mikki, all of Walnut Ridge; mother-in-law, Evelyn Whitmire of Walnut Ridge; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bryan Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery near Walcott with Paul McFadden officiating.

Pallbearers are Greg Evans, Gary Henson, George Stallings, David Whitmire, Donnie Whitmire and Chris Whitmire.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday in the Bryan Funeral Home Chapel.

Alice Esther Berry

NEWPORT — Alice Esther Berry, 86, of Newport died Thursday, July 2, 2009.

She was born July 5, 1922, the daughter of Henry and Hattie Cook.

She was a retired Newport public school teacher and a member of the First Baptist Church and Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Andrew Berry; and her parents.

Mrs. Berry is survived by three sons, Bobby Berry of Newport, Ronnie Berry of Batesville and Jimmy Berry of Diaz.

Graveside services were Thursday at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.

Edith Marie Childress

JONESBORO — Edith Marie Childress passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009, at her residence.

She was born July 19, 1940 in Alicia. She lived in Jonesboro for 35 years and was formerly of the Walnut Ridge-Alicia area. She retired from Gibson Container Co. in Jonesboro, where she worked as the office manager. Mrs. Childress was a member of the Alicia Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Childress of the home; a son, Michael Todd Floyd; two brothers, H.C. Todd of Jonesboro and Dean Todd of Phoenix; and a daughter-in-law, Tracee Floyd of Jonesboro. She was also preceded in death by a special aunt and uncle, Sunshine and Euel Freer.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Entombment will follow under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday in Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Gustavia Davis

DENTON — Gustavia Davis, 86, of Denton passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009, in Walnut Ridge.

Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Black Rock, the daughter of John E. and Virgie Ward McCarroll. She was married to Paul Davis on June 27, 1953.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and member of the First United Methodist Church in Black Rock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; one brother, Vernon McCarroll; and one sister Lorene Gibbons.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David and Rita Davis of Smithville; one sister, Jessie Laird of Walnut Ridge; one brother, John Albert McCarroll of Black Rock; two grandsons, Nathan Davis of Jonesboro, and Jeremy Davis of Walnut Ridge; as well as, many other relatives and friends who will mourn her passing.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel at Walnut Ridge with the Rev. Mark Massey and the Rev. Bob McMillon officiating. Interment will be in Oak Forest Cemetery at Black Rock.

Arrangements are under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Davis, Jeremy Davis, Donald Clayton, Dickie Smith, Donald Laird, C.V. McCarroll and Jeremy Gibbens.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Black Rock or the charity of your choice.

Arzella Fuse

OSCEOLA — Arzella Fuse, 95, died Friday, July 3, at Osceola Healthcare.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Fuse Jr.; and daughter, Ruthie Merritt.

Survivors include a son, Earlie W. Fuse of Centerville, Ill.; daughters, Louise Ross, Minnie Mae Williams and Marva Washington, all of Osceola, Dorothy Walker and Gladys Johnson, both of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Kathrine Sims of Chicago; 30 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great grandchildren

Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday in New Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Osceola followed by the funeral at 1. Burial will be in Whiteside Cemetery at Osceola.

Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home.

John Madison Haynes

BLYTHEVILLE — John Madison Haynes, 79, of
Blytheville died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Little Rock.

Survivors include children, John Keith Haynes of Jacksonville, Deborah Brown of Armorel, Beth Barron of Rives, Mo., Gini Adametz of Little Rock and Mae Basham of Memphis; brothers, James Allen Haynes Jr. of Gulfport, Miss., and Dr. Max Haynes of Blytheville; sisters, Carrie Sue Berry of Franklin, Tenn., Zada Payne of Marion and Vera Work and Janet Morehead, both of Blytheville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Cobb Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Monday in Cobb Funeral Home.

Martha McKinney

JONESBORO — Martha Vernell McKinney, 71, of Jonesboro died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

She was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith. Martha was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and an Air Force wife of 25 years. Her services included being a Red Cross volunteer and a Family Services volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Katherine Roberds; brother, Kenny Roberds; sister, Dorothy Edwards; daughter, Cathy Bittancourt; and great-grandson, Andrew Bittancourt.

Martha is survived by her husband, James McKinney of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Letitia and Danny Thomas of Valley View; five grandsons, Jeff Bittancourt of Fontana, Calif., Steven Henderson and Russ Henderson, both of Fort Benning, Ga., James Bittancourt of Eagen, Minn., and Jason Bittancourt of Savage, Minn.; two granddaughters, Danielle Long of Brookland and Shaena Thomas of Valley View; and three great-granddaughters, Kiersten, Elise and Braelyn.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Dave McKinney officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. today in Emerson Memorial Chapel.

Fred Robinson Jr.

SEARCY — Frederick Lee “Fred” Robinson Jr., 49, of Searcy, formerly of Paragould, died Thursday, July 2, 2009, in an automobile accident near Beebe.

Mr. Robinson was born Aug. 4, 1960, at Osceola to Faye and Frederick Lee Robinson Sr., who preceded him in death.

He was a 1978 graduate of Rivercrest High School and a 1982 graduate of Arkansas State University. He was a former coach, teacher and principal for the Greene County Tech School District and was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Robinson is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Jordon Robinson, and a son, Oliver Lee Robinson of Paragould.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Ripley Memorial Gardens at Ripley, Tenn. A private viewing will be held Sunday at Mitchell’s Funeral Home of Paragould.

Helen Karene Shannon

FRISCO, Texas — Helen Karene Shannon, 90, of Frisco passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 17, 1918, at Tuckerman to the late Thomas Allison and Lois Helena Fortenberry Brown. She married Leister L. Shannon of Clinton on Aug. 10, 1937.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leister L. Shannon, and an infant son, James John Shannon.

Shannon received her teaching degree from Arkansas State College in Jonesboro and taught for many years in Swifton before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1954. She taught English at Carrol High School until 1971, when she completed her library science degree at Texas Woman’s University.

Shannon served as research librarian for the Executive White House before returning to Texas as a librarian in Houston ISD, Flour Bluff ISD and Delmar College. She was a long-standing member of Ayers Street Church of Christ in Corpus Christi, the American Association of University Women and a member of numerous book and bridge clubs.

Shannon enjoyed organizing and sharing her love of history with many student travel groups to countries throughout Europe.

She is survived by her sons, Tommy L. Shannon and wife Mary Pace of Punta Gorda, Fla., and William Joseph Shannon and wife Celia of Rockport, Texas; one daughter, Janelle Kay Foster and husband James of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Jon U. Shannon, Michael L. Shannon, Shannon Kay Casada, Thomas Gregory Shannon and Jamee Arrington; great-grandchildren, Jon Michael Shannon, Tyler Casada, Thomas Pace Shannon, Colton Casada, Travis Casada, Connor Arrington, Nicholas Shannon and Danielle Shannon; sister-cousin, Ivon Soden of Jonesboro; and brother, T.A. Brown of Tuckerman.

Casketbearers will be James Foster, Michael Casada, Robert Roy Shannon, Jon Shannon, Michael Shannon and Greg Shannon.

Visitation will be from 4-6 pm. today in Roller McNutt Funeral Home Chapel at Clinton.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Choctaw Church of Christ with burial in Hunter Hill Cemetery at Clinton.

Joann Weber

RECTOR — Funeral services for 61-year-old Joann Weber of Rector, who passed away on Friday, July 3, at her residence after a long illness with cancer, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Rector General Baptist Church with Marston Carpenter officiating.

Interment will be in Woodland Heights Cemetery with Irby Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Weber was a registered nurse and had worked many years in the medical field.

Mrs. Weber was born April 1, 1948, to the late B.D. and Pearl Midkiff Beaton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Neil Beaton; two brothers, Dewayne and J.W. Beaton; an infant sister, Mary Beaton; and one sister, Linda Springmeyer.

Survivors are her loving husband, Dennis Weber of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Hae Sun Weber of Rector; a daughter, Charla Weber of Rector; two grandsons, Mitchell and Reed Weber; and three sisters, Dortha Weatherford of Rector, Ima Jean Hall of Lindsey, Calif., and Bobby Simpson of St. Louis.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday in Rector General Baptist Church.
