Flying during a pandemic topic for Lions

FedEx pilot Markus Hartwig will give a presentation on flying around the world during the current pandemic for the Tuesday morning meeting of the Jonesboro University Heights Lions Club.

Hartwig, who will speak via Zoom from Hong Kong, will tell how cargo airlines, unlike passenger ones, have not seen any reductions in flights, and if anything are busier than ever.

The meeting will be 6:30 a.m. will be via Zoom only.

Heritage Sites to reopen

Arkansas State University Heritage Sites are planning to reopen with limited tours available beginning Aug. 4. Each site will open with a reduced tour schedule.

Tours are 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. on the following locations and days:

Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, Piggott – Mondays-Fridays.

Lakeport Plantation, Lake Village – Mondays-Fridays.

Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home – Tuesdays-Saturdays.

Southern Tenant Farmers Museum, Tyronza – Tuesdays-Saturdays.

Outdoor exhibits remain open at Rohwer Japanese American Relocation Center in McGehee, but the World War II Japanese American Interment Museum remains closed.

Guests are encouraged to call ahead for reservations. The Heritage Sites staff will be wearing face coverings and taking other steps to help ensure a safe touring experience. Guests also will be required to wear face coverings.

CCCF grants available

Nonprofits in Craighead County can go to arcf.org/givingtree to apply online for grants through Craighead County Community Foundation, an affiliate of Arkansas Community Foundation.

Applications must be submitted online by Aug. 15. Any IRS 501(c)(3) public charity, public school, government agency or hospital in Craighead County is eligible to apply. Other applicants may be considered if the project has a clear charitable purpose for the public benefit.

This year, the Community Foundation is accepting two different kinds of proposals:

Projects with a special emphasis on early literacy are eligible for Grade-Level Reading grants.

Proposals focusing on race relations, poverty and pandemic response in Craighead County are eligible to apply for Giving Tree Grants.
