JONESBORO — The Arkansas State Athletics Department announced Tuesday that due to COVID-19 testing and taking extra precautions to provide a safe travel environment, its volleyball team will not participate in this week’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
ASU notified the Sun Belt Conference office Tuesday that its volleyball team will be unable to travel to Foley, Ala., for the league’s 2020 volleyball championship that began Wednesday. As a result of this notification, the Sun Belt has removed the Red Wolves from the tournament bracket and pool play.
The Red Wolves were scheduled to compete in Pool A at the Sun Belt tournament as the No. 4 seed from the West Division. ASU was scheduled to play Appalachian State on Thursday and Coastal Carolina on Friday.
“We’re obviously very disappointed that we aren’t going to be able to compete in the conference tournament, but the safety and health of our student-athletes is our top priority,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said in an ASU press release. “I’m heartbroken for our seniors who did not get to finish their season at the conference tournament, but I’m thankful for their contributions to our program.”
ASU finishes the season with an 8-8 record, all against Sun Belt Conference West Division competition. The Red Wolves finished fourth in the West Division.
