NEWPORT — The coronavirus is now the third leading cause of death in Arkansas, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Tuesday.

Cancer and heart attacks are the first and second causes of death, Hutchinson said, with 219.8 and 94.4 deaths per 100,000 population. The COVID death rate is 65.8.

“It is a deadly virus that takes people’s lives. We want to make sure everybody understands the seriousness of it,” Hutchinson said.

In Jackson County there were 715 confirmed cases, up 7 from Monday, with 215 probable cases, 251 active cases, 5 confirmed deaths and 1 probable.

There were 16 more confirmed deaths reported across the state, including three in Poinsett County and one in Clay County, bringing the statewide total to 1,833 confirmed deaths and an additional 200 probable COVID deaths for a grand total of 2,003.

Statewide, 7,410 test results found 520 confirmed new cases, bringing the total to 105,223. Probable cases, produced by the rapid antigen testing, rose by 358.

The number of hospitalized patients statewide dropped by 21 to 667. Of those 121 were on ventilators.

Both Craighead and Greene counties had more than 30 new cases each.

Dr. Jose Romero, the state’s health secretary, said families should limit gatherings during the coming holidays to no more than 10 people at a time.

“Especially Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s – we need to really think seriously this year whether it is advisable to bring 20, 30 members into a home,” Romero said.
