NEWPORT — Tharon Davis scored on a pass reception, a fumble return and a punt return in the third quarter last Friday as Newport pulled away for a 41-22 victory over Bauxite in high school football.

The Greyhounds (3-0) saw a 21-3 halftime lead cut to five points as the Miners (1-2) scored 13 points to start the third quarter. Davis boosted the lead back to double digits as he caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dejai Marshall, followed by Mark Chavez’s extra point for a 28-16 advantage.

Davis returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 62 yards for another score, giving Newport a 41-16 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Davis finished with 11 carries for 51 yards and caught six passes for 80 yards. Marshall was 19-of-26 passing for 288 yards for the Greyhounds. Chris Reynolds led Newport’s defense with 10 tackles.

Jamarriel Balentine scored Newport’s first touchdown in the first quarter. After a Bauxite field goal, Marshall threw touchdown passes of 51 and 20 yards to Reynolds in the second quarter, the latter score followed by Jadarius Reed’s two-point conversion.

Newport remained No. 3 in Class 3A according to this week’s Arkansas Sports Media Poll.

Harding Academy received 23 first-place votes to lead Class 3A voting with 135 points, followed by Prescott with four first-place votes and 103 points for second. Newport (80 points) is third in the rankings, followed No. 4 Booneville (40 points) and No. 5 Rison (22).

Newport has another home game Friday night against former conference rival Lonoke. The Jackrabbits defeated the Greyhounds 49-40 when the teams met last season.
