SEARCY — Newport forced Riverview to finish with negative offensive yardage last Friday as the Greyhounds kept their record perfect with a 41-0 rout of the Raiders.
The Greyhounds (6-0, 2-0 3A-2 conference) held the Raiders (0-4, 0-2) to minus-11 yards in total offense. Newport earned its first shutout victory since beating Centerpoint 35-0 in the 2018 state playoffs.
Newport led 28-0 at halftime after scoring two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. Jamarriel Balentine, who led Newport with 89 yards on 16 carries, opened the scoring on a 3-yard run. Mark Chavez followed with the first of his three successful extra-point kicks.
Jadarius Reed scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 1-yard run and Chris Reynolds threw a two-point conversion pass to Antwan Hardaway, giving Newport a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Eli Alcorn scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter and Dejai Marshall fired a 3-yard touchdown pass to Reynolds in the same period.
Newport closed the scoring in the third quarter while putting the sportsmanship rule’s running clock into effect. Marshall scored on a 15-yard run and Reed scored on another 1-yard run.
Marshall was 15-of-19 passing for 190 yards and another touchdown, with Isiah Kendall catching five passes for 91 yards.
Jakeyvin Davis led Newport’s defense with five tackles.
Newport moved from third to second in the Arkansas Sports Media Class 3A poll this week, passing Prescott. Harding Academy leads the poll with 21 first-place votes and 121 total points, followed by Newport with four first-place votes and 86 points. Prescott (83 points), McGehee (30) and Hoxie (22) round out the five-team rankings.
The Greyhounds play at home Friday night against Mountain View in another conference clash. The Yellowjackets (4-2, 0-1 conference) opened 3A-2 play last Friday with a 49-22 home loss to Harding Academy.
