A Newport dental office donated thousands of dollars to an Arkansas State University-Newport scholarship fund on June 1.

Dr. Kelly McKinney, DMD Dentistry Office presented a check for $6,500 to ASU-Newport’s Sydney Sutherland Memorial Scholarship.

Dr. McKinney’s office raised the funds by selling pink yard signs that included a photograph of Sydney Sutherland and #JusticeforSydney at the bottom.

Maggy Sutherland, Sydney’s mother, worked at the dental office for many years. While the signs helped raise money for the Sydney Sutherland Memorial Scholarship, Dr. McKinney’s office also wanted to spread Sydney’s smile across Northeast Arkansas.

On her Facebook page, Dr. McKinney stated: “This money will go towards helping others right here in Jackson County accomplish their dream of becoming a nurse just like Sydney. While we love supporting this special cause and seeing Sydney’s beautiful smile light up hundreds of yards across the state, it will never make up for the fact that she is gone. She should be here. We will continue to say her name, seek justice for her and her family, raise money for her scholarship, and remember the Sassy, daughter, sister, nurse, and friend she was to so many.”

ASU-Newport thanks Dr. McKinney and her office for helping support this scholarship that will assist future nursing students in completing their program and serving others just as Sydney did.
