The 2020-21 Newport Greyhound Basketball Team are Conference Champions this season after over 40 years without a title.

The Hounds, led by Head Coach Brandon Gates, secured the 3A – Region 2 Conference Championship with a win over Clinton Tuesday, Feb. 9, 62-51.

The Hounds came out ready for the win. At the end of the first quarter, Newport led 11-10 with balanced scoring and a team strategy. The score remained close at the half, 28-24. Although Clinton made what adjustments they could, the Hounds pulled away in the third quarter, 51-32. The game ended with a 61-51 victory for the Hounds.

Chris Reynolds led with 20 points, followed by Jairus Dean with 11 points, Jerry Woods with nine points, Isiah Kendall with eight points and Malachi Gates with seven points. When asked about the win to secure the championship, Coach Gates replied, “The Hounds were hungry! The team stuck to the game plan and kept fighting until the end.”

The Hounds have an overall record of 16-3 for the season, 13-3 league. The team proved just as successful playing on the road (8-2) as at home (7-1). Currently, the Hounds are on an 11-game winning streak leading into District Tournament play. Unfortunately, the Arctic winter weather has interfered with the tournament schedule. The plans for the district and regional tournaments have not been released as of press time. The Hounds are ranked sixth in 3A under 5-Bergman, 4-Osceola, 3-Mayflower, 2-Baptist Prep, and 1-Waldron.
