The Shearer’s Foods Newport Plant has received a $32,000 cash incentive from the Entergy Arkansas Incentive Program for its recent LED Processing Lighting Upgrade Project.

The electric company pays businesses incentives for saving energy when upgrading existing lighting fixtures to high efficiency LED fixtures.

“This project has resulted in brighter areas in the packaging and processing areas, reducing risks onsite and improving team member safety. It also allows us to do our part to reduce electrical consumption,” said Harvey Williams, Shearer’s plant director.

The new fixtures consume less electricity than fluorescent tubes and will save almost 50 percent on electricity costs, Shearer’s officials said, while reducing its carbon footprint and demand on the electrical grid.

“Participating in the Entergy Arkansas large commercial and industrial program will save Shearer’s about 191,000 kilowatt hours of energy annually,” said Matt Faries, Entergy Arkansas area customer service manager. “That is equivalent to avoiding 131 tons of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere or removing 27 vehicles from our roadways.”

Faries added: “Taking steps to be more energy efficient helps not only Shearer’s Foods bottom line but all Entergy Arkansas customers by reducing the overall demand for electricity. This decreased demand allows Entergy to postpone or avoid expensive additions to our electrical infrastructure, and we pass that savings on to all our customers.”
