BATESVILLE — White River Health System (WRHS) announced Wednesday the opening of the WRMC Medical Detoxification Unit located inside White River Medical Center (WRMC).

The WRMC Medical Detox Unit is a 3-5 day program for adult patients voluntarily detoxing from prolonged substance abuse or alcohol abuse. The unit consists of four private rooms.

Medical detoxification is the first step on the path to recovery. Inpatient settings offer the advantages of constant medical care and supervision as well as the availability of treatment if serious complications from withdrawal should arise.

Dr. Jerrod Anderson and Dr. Amanda Johnson will work closely with the nursing staff and the patient to provide a safe and therapeutic environment. Medications are provided for management of withdrawal symptoms and discomfort during the withdrawal process. Prior to discharge, a case management team will assist patients in creating a plan of care to further their specific recovery goals. These may range from outpatient counseling to inpatient psychiatric or rehabilitation programs.

The WRMC Medical Detox Unit is accepting patients with prolonged substance misuse disorders who are at least 18 years old. This includes pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Substance use disorders treated include primarily alcohol, opiates, and benzodiazepines. As a voluntary program, the patient must be able and willing to consent to treatment.

Inpatient medical detoxification is covered by most insurances. Patients meeting criteria for inpatient medical detoxification, must be experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms or be at risk of a severe withdrawal process. Prolonged excessive use of drugs or alcohol and or underlying medical problems place individuals at an increased risk for withdrawal complications.

To enter into the program, patients can speak with their primary care provider or call (870) 262-1648. Intake coordination is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
