JONESBORO — Craighead County recorded three more coronavirus deaths in Thursday’s updated report from the Arkansas Department of Health, while Lawrence and Clay counties added one death each.

Statewide, there were 877 confirmed new cases with probable cases bringing the day’s total to 1,072. Both numbers were down compared to last Thursday. The statewide total of confirmed cases rose to 101,586. Confirmed and probable cases total 109,712.

Generally, confirmed cases are positive results from the more reliable PCR (polymerise chain reaction) tests, which have to be processed in labs. Probable cases come from point of care antigen tests, which provide results in about 15 minutes. The antigen tests produce higher positivity rates.

For example, 8.7 percent of 46,712 PCR tests in Craighead County have been positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, while 13.4 percent of 5,856 antigen tests have produced positive results, according to ADH.

The death toll statewide rose to 1,732 confirmed and 1,894 total. Some probable COVID-related deaths can’t be confirmed without an autopsy.

The health department said 666 COVID patients were hospitalized, up four from Wednesday, and 100 were on ventilators, an increase of 1.

The new numbers were produced following receiving results from 10,906 PCR tests, 1,241 and antigen tests.

The Health Department reported that the top counties for new cases Thursday were Garland, 108; Pulaski, 95; Washington, 90; Benton, 76; and Craighead, 52.
