JONESBORO — The Arkansas Department of Transportation has proposed more than $130 million in road improvements in Craighead County during the next three fiscal years. That’s on top of projects that are already under construction.

Neighboring counties will also see a lot of work in the near term, as well, according to ArDOT’s 2021-24 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), based on federal fiscal calendars. The draft document is available for public review through March 9.

The Northeast Arkansas Regional Transportation Planning Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday to review the Jonesboro area projects.

For Brad Smithee, ArDOT’s chief engineer for District 10, there are some challenges ahead in supervising all the various projects, but also some excitement with some long neglected bridge replacement projects – including one job that will replace up to 14 bridges in Mississippi County under a special federal grant.

The state received $16.2 million in extra federal funds from the Competitive Highway Bridge Program, which encourages novel approaches to gaining cost efficiency by grouping several bridges into one project. The theory behind it is to gain lower unit pricing on such things as steel and concrete compared to smaller bridge projects.

The STIP also includes more than $111 million in projects in various locations along the 288-mile U.S. 412 corridor.

The STIP may be downloaded from the ArDOT website at: http://www.ardot.gov/STIP. It’s also available for viewing at most public libraries.
