JONESBORO — Jonesboro Fire Chief Kevin Miller hopes the amending of the Arkansas Civil Service requirement that lowers the age to apply to 18 from 21 will help his department achieve full staffing.

The JFD is down four people, but he hopes two will be hired soon. The department has set up testing dates for July 29-30. One will be the written test, the other a physical test.

“Applicants don’t have to have any previous experience,” Miller said. “They just need to be a high school graduate or have a GED, have a driver’s license and no felony convictions.”

Prospective applicants can find an application on the City of Jonesboro’s website at www.jonesboro.org. Miller said study guides for the tests are available at City Hall, 300 S. Church St. in Downtown Jonesboro.

Miller said recruitment has been down for the past few years, but that’s a national trend, he added.

He said the training process is a six-month program. The Arkansas Fire Academy in Camden is the main campus, Miller said, but Jonesboro has a satellite office where recruits can attend.

“We will train you in firefighting,” he said.

Miller said federal grants have enabled the department to hire more firefighters, and he hopes to be fully staffed within the next year. Fully staffed is 124 firefighters, he said.

He said to qualify to become a recruit, the following is required:

Picture I.D. will be checked prior to the written exam and the physical agility test.

Persons interested in a firefighter position must meet these minimum qualifications:

Be a United States citizen.

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Minimum age 18 (at the time of testing).

Maximum age 34 (at the time of hiring).

No felony convictions.

Valid driver’s license.

Copy of your high school diploma or GED or transcript.

Copy of your current driver’s license.

Copy of your birth certificate.

If you have served in the military, a copy of your DD214 release.

Copy of your Social Security card.

Signed liability waivers.

Completed Fire Department questionnaire.

Candidates who pass the written exam and the physical agility test will be subject to an oral interview, drug screen, medical exam and a comprehensive background check including a polygraph test as positions become available. Applicants will be notified.
