JONESBORO — Greene County had more new coronavirus cases, 37, than any other county in Northeast Arkansas Monday, according to new numbers released by the Arkansas Department of Health.

Craighead County, with more than twice the population of Greene, had 32 confirmed new cases. And neither was among the state’s top counties in new cases.

Statewide, the toll of confirmed virus deaths rose by 30 to 2,191, but none was in Northeast Arkansas.

Last week, Craighead County averaged 61.28 daily new cases, while Greene County averaged 33.14 new cases and Jackson, home of two large state prisons, had a daily average of 40.57.

Monday’s numbers were based on results from 10,603 PCR tests and 890 of the less accurate antigen tests.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson saw a small glimmer of hope in Monday’s report.

“We saw a decrease in new cases from last Monday, and this is a hopeful sign,” Hutchinson said in a news release. “But our hospitalizations are still going up. How we handle Thanksgiving this year will determine our hospitalizations around Christmas. Thanks for being a part of turning this fight around.”

Statewide 974 people were hospitalized because of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, which is an increase of 12. It’s also the most ever. Of those 384 were in intensive care, an increase of 13 from Sunday, and 164 were on ventilators, up by one from Sunday.

In Northeast Arkansas, 187 were hospitalized, down from 192 Sunday, but 59 were in ICUs, an increase of four. Of those, 27 were on ventilators, an increase of five from Sunday.

Two manufacturing facilities in Jonesboro had five active cases each, according to another health department report. Since the pandemic hit Arkansas, 88 workers have been infected at one of the companies, while the other company has had a total of 81 cases. The state’s report doesn’t identify the companies involved.
