MOUNTAIN HOME — The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accidental shooting death of a Jonesboro teen that occurred Friday.

The Emergency Enhanced 911 Operations Center in Mountain Home received a call just before 6 p.m. from a female, 14, stating she was playing with her father’s gun and accidentally shot her friend, Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery announced Monday.

Deputies and emergency medical service found Addy Gibson, 13, found lying on the floor of a residence on Panther Heights Road near Lake Norfork, the announcement read. They attempted to revive Gibson but were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead by the county coroner.

“Sheriff’s investigators were told that the two girls were playing hide and seek inside the house. One of the girls went to a downstairs bedroom and found the rifle, which she believed to be unloaded,” Montgomery wrote. “When the victim came down the stairs, the girls began laughing about the gun. The gun was in fact loaded and was accidentally discharged. The gun in question was found and taken into evidence. There were no adults at the house when the shooting took place.”

Gibson’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Little Rock to confirm the cause of her death. According to her obituary, she will be memorialized at services Wednesday morning.

No foul play is suspected in Gibson’s death.
