JONESBORO — Police are investigating a murder after a woman was found dead Monday near an apartment complex in northwest Jonesboro.
Officers with the Jonesboro Police Department responded to a call around 10:30 a.m. from the 600 block of West Cherry Avenue, said Sally Smith, public information specialist.
“Basically, they had notified (dispatchers) that they had stumbled across a body,” she said. “There were some signs of foul play and we decided to investigate this as a homicide.”
The department didn’t release the identification of the victim because the woman’s next of kin had not been notified as of press deadline, Smith said. The victim’s name, age and town of residence will be released today in JPD’s initial incident report, she said.
At least 11 yellow evidence markers were placed at the scene by investigators.
The woman’s murder comes nine days after Brian Ward, 40, was found dead in his apartment in the 1800 block of Self Circle.
Ward was laying on the floor with “a suspected gunshot wound,” according to previous Sun reporting. His body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock to determine the cause of his death.
In addition to the new investigation, Smith said the department’s Criminal Investigation Division has active probes into the murders of Ward, Donald Hubbard, 78, and Ronald Volyes, 57 – men found murdered in their Jonesboro homes this year.
“(Ward’s homicide is) the newest and freshest that we’re investigating so we’re following some leads that have come in,” she said.
The unidentified woman’s homicide marks the 10th murder the department has investigated this year, with the last occurring in mid-October.
Other victims include the following:
Tiquan Wilson, 21, of Jonesboro, in January.
Donald Hubbard, 78, of Jonesboro, in January.
Elijah Ross, 1, of Jonesboro, in February.
Jonathan Morgan, 39, of Jonesboro, in April.
Robert Green, 30, of Jonesboro, in April.
