JONESBORO — A man was being held Monday on a $750,000 bond after police say he raped a young girl several times while she had been sleeping.
Jonesboro Police Detective Kelsey Chism said Welby Busch, 31, of Jonesboro, was “a family friend” of the underaged victim. JPD learned of the girl’s allegations in late December 2020 when her mother called officers to their home on Kathleen Street, according to the probable cause affidavit.
“Officers took the initial report and forwarded the information to the Arkansas Children Abuse Hotline, which then sent the information to the Arkansas (State Police) Crimes Against Children Division,” it read.
In an interview with a state police investigator, the victim claimed that Bush “touched her while she was asleep,” starting around the Thanksgiving holiday, the affidavit read. In one instance, she woke up in pain with Busch’s genitalia inside her.
“She hurried up and moved and then saw that Busch had his private area out … and that he was in the same bed with her. The juvenile victim stated that when she woke up, Busch pulled his pants up and pretended to be asleep,” the sworn document read. “She went to try to wake up her grandma but she wouldn’t wake up and her mom was not home.”
The most recent incident occurred on Dec. 21, 2020, two days before the police was dispatched to the victim’s home. The victim was awakened by the suspect probing her genitalia, it states.
Busch was arrested Friday afternoon, according to the online jail roster. District Court Judge David Boling found probable cause Monday to charge him with rape of a child 14 years or younger – a Class Y felony punishable by 10 to 40 years or life imprisonment in an Arkansas Department of Corrections facility.
The age of the victim was not disclosed in the probable cause affidavit.
