Child abuse suspect arrested

JONESBORO — A man suspected of battering a girl in February 2019 was being held Wednesday on a $50,000 bond.

The Jonesboro Police Department was dispatched to NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital regarding “possible child abuse,” according to the probable cause affidavit. The victim was transported to the local facility for “rib, face and head injuries that the doctor deemed non-accident consistent with abusive head trauma.”

The girl’s injuries were so severe that she was examined and treated at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, where a doctor agreed the afflictions were consistent with abuse, the sworn document read.

Police concluded that Donte Carter, 30, of Jonesboro, was the sole adult with the child at the time of her injuries and denied being involved. Carter, identified as the victim’s family member, was uncooperative with Arkansas State Police and JPD investigators, the affidavit states.

A warrant was obtained for his arrest on April 30, 2019. Records show Carter was arrested Sunday.

District Court Judge David Boling found probable cause Wednesday to charge him with second-degree domestic battering causing physical injury to a family or household member 12 years or younger and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Boling also enacted a no-contact order between him and the victim.

Carter is due before a judge at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 26 at the Craighead County Courthouse, 511 S. Main St., Jonesboro.

Boling also found probable cause for charges and set bonds for the following:
