JONESBORO — The number of new coronavirus cases slowed to a trickle last week in Northeast Arkansas. Part of that is likely less testing due to bad weather. But the number of people who test positive is declining at a sharp rate, as well.

The number of active cases for each county has also declined in the past week.

The 14-day test positivity average from Jan. 30 through Sunday dropped below 10 percent for most NEA counties, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

The rate for Craighead County dropped to 6.2 percent, down from 10.2 percent on Jan., 26. Greene County’s rate dropped from 11.8 percent to 6.7 percent, while the rate in Mississippi County dropped from 12.3 percent to 9.3 percent.

On the other hand, the positivity rate in Jackson County actually rose to 6.1 percent Sunday, compared to 5.2 percent on Jan. 26.

All other counties in the region have had significant drops in test positivity since Jan. 26, especially Poinsett County, which dropped from 14 percent to 7 percent; Clay from 11 percent to 7.1 percent; Randolph from 9.1 percent to 5.6 percent and Cross from 9.3 percent to 6.4 percent.

Neighboring Sharp County had the lowest test positivity rate in the state at 3.5 percent, according to the health department.

Monday’s county-level statistics weren’t available due to The Sun’s earlier weather-related deadline.
