JONESBORO — New coronavirus cases in Arkansas had been on the decline for most of this month. But on Thursday, the 3,106 new confirmed and probable cases represents an increase from the previous Thursday, even though roughly the same number of people were tested, according to a report released by Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

The death toll also rose by 55, including one in Craighead County. That’s the second death in as many days.

“The increase in new cases is disappointing and a reminder that we cannot let up in following the public health guidelines,” Hutchinson said in the news release. “Our vaccines are getting into the arms of Arkansans, but remember, we are totally dependent upon the supply that comes from manufacturers. Right now it is limited.”

Through Wednesday more than 170,000 people had received COVID-19 vaccinations through the state or through a separate contract between the federal government with CVS and Walgreens.

The Arkansas Department of Health said the state has administered 52.8 percent of the vaccine it has received. CVS and Walgreens have separate federal contracts to supply certain nursing homes, and only 13.8 percent of the doses those chains were allocated have been given to patients.

The health department reported the number of virus-connected hospitalizations dropped by 19 to 1,160. Of those, 375 were treated in intensive care units, down 13, while 195 were on ventilators, which is a reduction of 17.

But hospitalizations in Northeast Arkansas rose by 17 to 188. Of those, 38 were in ICUs, down one, and 15 were on ventilators, an increase of one.
