JONESBORO — Thursday’s report from the Arkansas Department of Health includes two coronavirus deaths each in Craighead and Clay counties and one each in Greene and Poinsett counties among 42 statewide.

However, the number of new cases resulting from recent testing shows some promise, according to Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

“Today’s report shows over 800 fewer cases with higher testing than this time last week,” Hutchinson said in a news release. “We also saw a decrease in hospitalizations and ventilator usage. This will relieve some of the strain on our health care system as we continue to distribute vaccine doses.”

The health department reported 1,735 new cases confirmed through lab testing and 756 probable cases through the less reliable but quicker antigen tests, for a total of 2,491 new cases.

Statewide 1,295 people were hospitalized because of the virus, which is down 67 from Wednesday; 426 were in intensive care units, a reduction of six; and 241 were on ventilators, which is down 14.

In Northeast Arkansas, 171 were hospitalized, a reduction of 17; 38 were in ICUs, down four; and 21 were on ventilators, a reduction of one.

The state said 264,511 people in Arkansas have contracted the disease since March and the death toll rose to 4,228.
