PARAGOULD — Elwanda Lorene Clayton, 89, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro.
Born Jan. 31, 1932, she was the daughter of Earnest Luther Collins and Mary Moore Collins.
She served as city clerk of Delaplaine City Council for several years before moving to Paragould in 2014.
She was a longtime member of Delaplaine Baptist Church.
She was a past employee of Cinch Manufacturing in Pocahontas and the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging in Paragould.
She played on the girls’ basketball team at Delaplaine High School, enjoyed watching the Delaplaine basketball teams play, and enjoyed reminiscing about high school basketball with other women basketball players of her generation.
She is survived by a daughter, Marsha Clayton of Monticello; sisters, Dorothy Burgess of Mountain Home and Louise (Gary) DeVore of Viola; brothers, Larry Collins of Paragould and Charles Collins of Delaplaine; a sister-in-law, Peggy Collins of Paragould; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth Clayton, a son, Tim Clayton, three sisters, Fayetta Meredith, Glenna Swink and Clora Russom, a brother, James Collins, and Ray Parsons, life companion of Marsha.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Clark officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be family and friends, with brothers, Larry Collins and Charles Collins, serving as honorary pallbearers.
Interment will be in Memorial Gardens at Paragould.
