On behalf of the residents of Jonesboro who were calling for a citywide mandated mask ordinance, our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Jonesboro City Council members Ann Williams and L.J. Bryant for co-sponsoring such an ordinance.

Even after Mayor Harold Perrin announced he would sponsor a resolution that would only encourage the wearing of masks, Williams and Bryant stood firm in their convictions to bring their mandated mask ordinance to a vote of the full city council.

Now that Gov. Asa Hutchison has issued a statewide mandated mask order, to take effect July 20, there will be no need to vote on the Williams/Bryant ordinance.

Kudos to these two courageous city council members for stepping up and doing the right thing, when knowing their ordinance would be controversial. Their fortitude on this issue will not be forgotten.
