OXFORD, Miss. — Arkansas State will open its 2020-21 men’s basketball season somewhere other than The Pavilion at Ole Miss.

The Justin Reed Ole Miss Classic that was scheduled to start Wednesday in Oxford, Miss., has been canceled because of positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing within the Ole Miss men’s basketball program. The Rebels have suspended team activities until Dec. 7, according to their announcement Monday.

ASU was scheduled to play Jackson State on Wednesday, Central Arkansas on Thursday and Ole Miss on Friday in the four-team event that the Rebels were to host.

The Red Wolves are attempting to reschedule their games with Jackson State and Central Arkansas, ASU announced in a press release Monday.

“This is obviously disappointing, but the safety of our student-athletes is paramount,” ASU head coach Mike Balado said in a university statement. “We are hopeful we can get games rescheduled with Jackson State and Central Arkansas, but we will keep the safety of our student-athletes at the forefront of any decision.”

ASU is scheduled to visit Memphis on Dec. 2 before hosting Crowley’s Ridge College for its home opener on Dec. 4.

Central Arkansas is attempting to schedule a game or games this week to fill the void after the cancellation at Ole Miss, according to a UCA press release.

As of now, UCA’s season opener will be Dec. 1 at Missouri State. Jackson State is scheduled to open the season Dec. 2 at North Alabama.
