Williams carries GCT in opener
PARAGOULD — David Williams ran for two touchdowns Friday night to lead Greene County Tech to a 20-0 victory over Westside in the season opener for both teams.
Williams scored the only points of the first half on a 1-yard run with 2:50 remaining in the second quarter. He found an opening for 48 yards and a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, giving GCT a 13-0 lead.
The Eagles added another touchdown on Christian Barber’s 18-yard pass to Rex Jernigan with 1:56 left in the game.
Westside finished with 170 total yards, including 137 rushing yards on 35 attempts. Tyler Ray led the Warriors in rushing with 81 yards on 18 carries, followed by River Engle with 34 yards on seven carries.
River Engle was 3-of-7 passing for 33 yards, with Kesler Engle catching two passes.
Ray led Westside defensively with four tackles and five assists, while Cameron Hedger had four tackles, three assists and an interception. Kesler Engle broke up two passes.
Mustangs prevail in double OT
HOXIE — Daylon Powell’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Stefan Coleman provided the margin of victory Friday night as Hoxie outlasted Cave City 54-48 in double overtime.
The final touchdown was the sixth accounted for by Powell, the Mustangs’ senior quarterback. He finished with 138 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 10 carries, also completing 5-of-7 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Senior running back ShunDerrick Powell added with 137 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
The teams were tied at 42 to end regulation. Both teams scored in the first overtime, but neither could add the two-point conversion as the game remained tied at 48. Daylon Powell scored for the Mustangs on a 1-yard run.
Hoxie (1-0) had possession first in the second overtime, scoring on Daylon Powell’s pass to Coleman, and held Cave City (0-1) on downs to end the game.
The teams combined for 28 points as the first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie. Daylon Powell scored two minutes into the game on a 3-yard run and ShunDerrick Powell broke a 75-yard touchdown run with 1:31 left in the quarter.
Hoxie led 28-21 at halftime. Daylon Powell scored on runs of 10 and 13 yards, also adding the two-point conversion after the latter touchdown with 3:40 remaining in the quarter.
Hoxie led 34-29 after ShunDerrick Powell’s 11-yard touchdown run with 6:10 left in the third quarter, but the Cavemen scored the next two touchdowns to lead 42-34 with 3:49 left in the game.
Daylon Powell scored at the 3:37 mark on a 60-yard run and added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 42.
Manning leads Bobcats past Rebels
WALNUT RIDGE — Senior quarterback Cole Manning accounted for 428 yards total offense and had a hand in all four touchdowns Friday to lead Walnut Ridge to a 28-22 victory over Highland.
Manning finished with 37 carries for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 15-of-29 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown.
The teams played to a 22-22 tie at halftime. Manning’s 13-yard touchdown run with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter provided the margin of victory for the Bobcats (1-0).
Walnut Ridge struck first on Manning’s 1-yard run with 7:19 left in the first quarter. He also added the two-point conversion.
Highland quarterback Wyatt Goodman scored on a 55-yard run with 5:58 left in the first quarter. Aaron Seymore’s two-point conversion pulled the Rebels (0-1) into an 8-8 tie.
After a turnover, Brayden Figgins scored on a 1-yard run as Highland took a 14-8 lead. Walnut Ridge tied the game on Manning’s 46-yard touchdown pass to Kel Slusser with 9:14 left in the second quarter.
Manning scored on a 29-yard run and found Mari Thomas on the two-point conversion to give the Bobcats a 22-14 lead with 3:13 left in the first half. Goodman answered on a 2-yard run with 1:14 remaining and the Rebels added the two-point conversion to tie the game.
Walnut Ridge's Mason Andrews caught eight passes for 75 yards, while Thomas had three receptions for 31 yards and Slusser two for 46.
Goodman finished with 19 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Benjamin Tokanang added 83 yards on 10 carries for the Rebels.
Greyhounds crush Comets
NEWPORT — Sophomore quarterback Dejai Marshall threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Newport to a 47-22 victory over Little Rock Mills on Friday night.
Marshall completed 22-of-27 passes for 183 yards, with classmate Isiah Kendall catching seven passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
Newport (1-0) outscored the Comets (0-1) 21-0 in the second period for a 35-16 halftime lead.
Four Newport players scored a rushing touchdown. Tharon Davis led the Greyhounds with 97 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Linebacker Jakeyvin Davis keyed the defense with 10 tackles.
Mills led 16-14 after the first quarter. Marshall scored Newport’s first touchdown on a 2-yard run and Davis reached the end zone on an 11-yard run.
Davis gave Newport the lead for good on a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Marshall also threw touchdown passes of 7 and 56 yards to Kendall in the second quarter, adding a two-point conversion run after the latter score.
Chris Young scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Jamarriel Balentine on a 1-yard run in the fourth to conclude Newport’s scoring.
