Powell leads Hoxie in 55-29 rout
HOXIE — Daylon Powell accounted for six touchdowns, four rushing and two passing, to lead Hoxie past Lake Village 55-29 in the Class 3A state football playoffs.
Powell finished with seven carries for 186 yards and four touchdowns, also completing 4-of-9 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs (10-0) advance to host Newport in an all-Northeast Arkansas second-round game next Friday.
Hoxie opened a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. Daylon Powell opened the scoring 10 seconds into the game on a 50-yard run, followed by ShunDerrick Powell’s 18-yard touchdown run at the 8:57 mark. Daylon Powell also threw two touchdown passes in the first period, a 43-yard strike to Stefan Coleman and a 41-yard pass to Cade Forrester, then added the two-point conversion after the latter score.
Daylon Powell scored on runs of 18, 53 and 43 yards in the second quarter, the last with 54 seconds remaining, as the Mustangs built a 49-14 halftime lead.
Grady Cook scored Hoxie’s last touchdown on an 8-yard run in the third quarter. Lake Village scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.
ShunDerrick Powell finished with five carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Coleman had two receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown, followed by Forrester with two receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Greyhounds romp past Bobcats
NEWPORT — Dejai Marshall fired five touchdown passes Friday night and Newport’s defense posted its third shutout of the season as the Greyhounds routed Corning 47-0 in the Class 3A state playoffs.
Marshall was 14-of-18 passing for 236 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds (9-1) into the second round. Newport will visit Hoxie next Friday.
Isiah Kendall finished with five receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns, while Eli Alcorn had two catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Jamarriel Balentine led Newport in rushing with 64 yards on nine carries, followed by Jadarius Reed with 58 on six attempts.
Marshall threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to Alcorn and 9 yards to Kendall to give Newport a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Marshall threw touchdown passes of 24 yards to Chris Reynolds and 9 yards to Alcorn in the second quarter, the latter score followed by Balentine’s two-point conversion for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Kendall caught a 44-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Reed scored on a 6-yard run. Newport’s final touchdown came on Devin Braxton’s 19-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Newport limited Corning (6-5) to six first downs and 81 total yards. Antwan Hardaway finished with six tackles and Kylan Crite had an interception.
Chester, Martens power Pocahontas
POCAHONTAS — Dawson Chester threw four touchdown passes to Michael Martens to lead Pocahontas to a 36-6 victory over Lamar in the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Redskins (9-2) will travel to Ozark (8-3) in the second round next Friday.
Pocahontas led 30-0 at halftime. Chester was 12-of-17 passing for 218 yards and four touchdowns, also finishing with 103 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10 carries. Martens finished with seven receptions for 154 yards and four touchdowns.
Connor Baker added 55 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Zavior Taylor led Pocahontas' defense with 10 tackles. C.J. Palmer had an interception defensively and three receptions for 40 yards offensively.
Colts roll behind Turner, West
WILSON — Kam Turner threw three touchdown passes, all to Jaylan West, and accounted for two more touchdowns as Rivercrest whipped Pottsville 38-6 in the Class 4A state playoffs.
Rivercrest (10-0) will host Prairie Grove (10-1) in a second-round game next Friday. The Tigers outlasted Blytheville 59-34 Friday night.
Turner was 11-of-17 passing for 214 yards, with West catching four passes for 113 yards and three touchdowns. Turner added 101 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, and he also returned a punt for a touchdown.
Turner scored on a 4-yard run and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to West in the first quarter. Keshawn Scott scored on a 1-yard run at the 2:40 mark of the second quarter to give the Colts a 19-0 halftime lead.
Turner returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the third quarter. He also threw touchdown passes of 66 and 24 yards to West in the third quarter to give the Colts a 38-0 lead.
Pottsville (4-6) avoided a shutout when Landon Mahan scored on a 2-yard run with 2:08 left in the game. Tray Jones finished with nine tackles, including three for loss, and a sack to lead the Colts. Turner added eight tackles, four for loss, and also broke up two passes.
Anderson, Pieri spark Pirates
DARDANELLE — Travelle Anderson ran for 259 yards and a touchdown while Cooper Pieri threw four touchdown passes to lead Gosnell past Dardanelle 48-26 in the Class 4A state playoffs.
Anderson also caught two touchdown passes and his 26 carries included runs of 69 and 56 yards to set up the final two touchdowns for the Pirates (4-3). Floyd Williams scored on a pair of 4-yard runs in the final six minutes, also adding a two-point conversion as Gosnell scored the final 14 points.
Gosnell will visit Dumas (8-3) for a second-round game next week.
Pieri connected with Anderson on a 4-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring at the 4:50 mark of the first quarter. Dardanelle (4-4) took a 7-6 lead after Drew Vega’s 31-yard run later in the period, but it would be the last lead for the Sand Lizards.
Anderson took Pieri’s pass 73 yards for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion 40 seconds into the second quarter. He scored on a 21-yard run at the 5:20 mark as Gosnell’s lead grew to 20-7.
Pieri threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Burcham with 38 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the Pirates a 26-13 halftime lead.
Vega scored on a 64-yard run with 5:03 left in the third quarter, but Pieri found Burcham on a 5-yard touchdown pass and then passed to Druw Reynolds on the two-point conversion for a 34-20 lead in the final minute of the quarter.
Vega threw his second touchdown pass of the game, rallying the Sand Lizards within 34-26 with 8:17 to play before the Pirates closed the game with the last 14 points.
Vega was Dardanelle’s rushing leader with 192 yards on 20 carries.
Seminoles shut out Cardinals
PINE BLUFF — Osceola limited Pine Bluff Dollarway to 77 total yards in defeating the Cardinals 17-0 in the Class 3A state playoffs.
Osceola (5-4) limited Dollarway (4-6) to 56 yards rushing and only 2.2 yards per carry. The Seminoles will travel to Booneville (9-2) next week in the second round.
Dontaven Littleton’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Landrian Clayton provided the only points of the first half with 1:18 remaining in the second quarter. Littleton scored on a 4-yard run with 3:16 left in the third quarter and passed to Jabari Person on the two-point conversion, giving Osceola a 14-0 lead.
Logan Slayton kicked a 23-yard field goal with 35 seconds left in the game to set the final score.
Littleton finished with 167 yards on 23 carries and was 4-of-8 passing for 43 yards. Skyler Young added 73 yards on 17 carries for Osceola.
EPC roars past Quitman
LEPANTO — East Poinsett County outscored Quitman 42-8 over the final three quarters to earn a 56-29 victory in the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs.
The Warriors (9-3) will visit Gurdon (9-1) next week in the quarterfinals. The Go-Devils have reached the third round without playing in the first two, receiving a bye in the first round and a forfeit on Friday when Carlisle dropped out because of COVID-19 quarantines.
Preston Rains accounted for four touchdowns for EPC. Rains finished with 167 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, also completing 10-of-15 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
EPC's Dennis Gaines added 190 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Deuce Moore had seven receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Carter Smith had a hand in EPC’s first two touchdowns, returning an interception 45 yards for a touchdown and throwing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Moore.
Quitman (6-6) led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter on three touchdown passes, but EPC came back to lead 28-21 at halftime. Rains scored on runs of 2 and 58 yards in the second quarter, with Gaines adding a two-point conversion.
Gaines scored on a 22-yard run, followed by Smith’s two-point conversion, and Rains fired a 9-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Edings, plus a two-point pass to Moore, in the third quarter.
Rains threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Moore as EPC took a 50-29 lead into the final quarter. Gaines scored the final touchdown on a 95-yard run with 5:27 remaining.
