MONROE, La. — Arkansas State left Fant-Ewing Coliseum with two losses in its first Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball series of the season.
ULM hit 8-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes Saturday and held ASU to 29 percent shooting to defeat the Red Wolves 62-55.
The Warhawks (4-5, 2-0 conference) won Friday night’s game with ease, leading by as many as 29 points in the second half on the way to an 84-72 victory.
ASU (3-6, 0-2 Sun Belt) used a 14-2 run Saturday to lead 48-44 with 7:11 to play, but ULM nailed free throws down the stretch to come away with the victory. The Red Wolves shot 76 percent (22-29) at the line, but went 3-of-7 in the final two minutes.
Caleb Fields led ASU with a game-high 16 points while Antwon Jackson added 10 points and tied his career high with eight rebounds. Norchad Omier posted his sixth consecutive game with double-digit rebounds, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Russell Harrison and Koreem Ozier led ULM with 13 points each.
ULM opened the game on a 15-4 run, but the Red Wolves rallied to tie the score at 23. A 6-2 spurt saw that Warhawks lead by seven, but Fields drained a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the period to send the Red Wolves to halftime down three, 35-32.
The Warhawks expanded their lead to 42-34 early in the second half before the Red Wolves used the 14-2 run to lead by four, 48-44, with seven minutes remaining. Jackson keyed the run for the Red Wolves by pulling down three offensive rebounds and knocking down three free throws to give ASU the lead.
For the game, ASU shot 29 percent (15-52), hitting 3-of-18 beyond the arc. The Red Wolves limited the Warhawks to 40 percent from the field, but ULM knocked down 9-of-22 from 3-point range.
Friday night, ULM went on a 25-5 run in the first half to take a 45-29 halftime lead. The Warhawks were 12-of-22 from the 3-point line and shot 48.4 percent from the field overall.
Down 81-52 with 6:14 left in the game, the Red Wolves closed with a 20-3 run.
Ozier and Harrison led ULM with 17 points each. Making his first start for ASU, Markise Davis scored 22 points, while Marquis Eaton added 19.
ASU dropped to 0-6 against Division I opponents with the two losses. The Red Wolves continue Sun Belt play next weekend at Texas State, tipping off Friday night at 6 and Saturday at 4 p.m.
