JONESBORO — Jonesboro High School graduates Madison Shelton and Clara Parker are the recipients of the 2020 Christy Rankin Memorial Tennis Scholarship.

Shelton played soccer for JHS and she plans on attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., in the fall.

Parker has signed to play volleyball for the University of Arkansas. Some of Parker’s accomplishments include 2018 Gatorade Arkansas Player of the Year, three state titles, state finals MVP in 2018 and 2019, plus being a key player in a undefeated season.

The Christy Rankin Memorial Scholarship was created by a classmate in 2010. The scholarship is presented to a senior at JHS who has a 3.00 GPA or greater, shows good sportsmanship, and has a passion for their chosen sport.

The scholarship amount was $750 for each student.

“The recipient doesn’t have to play tennis, but they have to show good sportsmanship,” said Christy’s mother, Barbara Rankin, who presented the scholarships to the students on Tuesday. “Tennis was Christy’s passion.”

Christy Rankin was a 1984 graduate of Jonesboro High School where she was the Arkansas Overall Tennis Champion and was named All-State and All-American.

Rankin graduated college from the University of Arkansas where she was a four-year Letterman for the Lady Razorback Tennis Team.

She served as Assistant Tennis Pro for the Highland Tennis Country Club and she previously worked at the University of South Florida for several years instructing tennis classes.

Rankin was a professional tennis instructor for the Harry Hopman International Tennis Academy at the Saddlebrook Resort. She also taught tennis in Boca Raton, Fla., and worked numerous international clinics including places in China, Japan, and the Cayman Islands.

Rankin died of natural causes at her home in Fayetteville, N.C., on June 9, 2010.
