JONESBORO — Two area boys’ basketball teams are ranked atop their respective classifications in this week’s Arkansas Sports Media high school state polls.
Jonesboro (16-3) moved to No. 1 in Class 5A in balloting by a panel of sports media from around the state. Osceola (16-2) climbed to No. 1 in the five-team Class 3A rankings.
The Hurricane also climbed one rung in the overall 10-team rankings, moving from seventh to sixth. Magnolia continues to lead the overall rankings, followed by Bentonville, Little Rock Central, North Little Rock, Bryant, Jonesboro, Little Rock Parkview, Sylvan Hills, Maumelle and Marion.
Jonesboro, which defeated West Memphis 71-54 in its only game last week, has won 12 consecutive games. The Hurricane received nine first-place votes and 77 votes in the Class 5A voting, followed by Little Rock Parkview with five first-place votes and 65 points.
Sylvan Hills and Maumelle received two first place votes each to rank third and fourth, respectively, with 59 and 33 points, while Marion was fifth with 30 points. Maumelle was No. 1 last week before losing 73-61 at Sylvan Hills.
Osceola (16-2) extended its winning streak to 12 games last week with a 79-21 victory over Harrisburg.
The Seminoles received 15 first-place votes and 87 points, while Dumas dropped to second with two first-place votes and 59 points after losing 73-71 at Rison. Mayflower and Bergman are tied for third in 3A, followed by Waldron.
Blytheville (22-2) continues to rank second behind Magnolia in Class 4A with 70 points. The Chickasaws are also among other teams receiving votes in the overall rankings.
Other area boys’ teams receiving votes in their respective classifications include Brookland, Class 4A; Manila, Class 3A; Newport, Class 3A; Tuckerman, Class 2A; and Ridgefield Christian, Class 1A.
Three area girls’ teams are ranked in their respective classifications this week.
Brookland (15-4) remained No. 4 in the Class 4A rankings. The Lady Bearcats have a 10-game winning streak.
Marmaduke (24-5) stayed at No. 3 in Class 2A after losing 45-43 last week to No. 1 Melbourne on two free throws with no time left in the game. Hoxie (22-2) is ranked fifth in Class 3A.
Melbourne is No. 1 in the overall rankings, followed by Greenwood, Fort Smith Northside, Batesville, Bentonville, Conway, Little Rock Christian, Harrison, North Little Rock and Vilonia. Paragould and Nettleton were among other teams receiving votes in the overall rankings.
Area teams that received votes in their respective classifications included Paragould, Class 5A; Nettleton, Class 5A; Jonesboro, Class 5A; Valley View, Class 4A; and Tuckerman, Class 2A.
