Jonesboro remains No. 3 in Class 5A poll

JONESBORO — The first Arkansas Sports Media high school basketball polls of 2021 include five boys’ teams from The Sun circulation area in the top five of their respective classifications.

Two area girls’ teams are also in the rankings for the week ending Jan. 2.

Jonesboro (5-3) dropped from the Overall boys’ rankings after narrow losses to North Little Rock and Little Rock Christian over the holiday break, but the Hurricane remained No. 3 in the five-team Class 5A rankings. Greene County Tech is also among teams receiving votes in the 5A boys’ poll.

While Jonesboro’s home game against Paragould has been postponed until Jan. 26, the Hurricane will visit Greene County Tech on Friday in an early 5A-East showdown.

Jonesboro was first among other teams receiving votes in the Overall poll with 23 points. The Hurricane had 33 points in the 5A poll, trailing only Marion and Little Rock Parkview.

Blytheville received two votes for the Overall rankings and remained No. 3 in Class 4A boys balloting with 51 points, trailing only Magnolia and Little Rock Mills. Brookland was first among other teams receiving votes in Class 4A with 13 points, one less than Batesville Southside. The Bearcats are scheduled to host the Southerners on Thursday.

Manila moved up one place to No. 3 in the Class 3A boys voting with 37 points, while Osceola dropped two places to No. 5 with 22 points. Rivercrest and Corning were among other teams receiving votes.

Tuckerman moved up one place to No. 4 in Class 2A boys with 30 points in the voting.

In the girls’ rankings, Tuckerman and Marmaduke are second and fourth in Class 2A balloting with 67 and 28 points, respectively. Hoxie is among other teams receiving votes in Class 3A.

Jonesboro and Paragould are among other teams receiving votes in Class 5A girls. The teams are scheduled to play tonight at 6 at Don Riggs Hurricane Gym.
