SEARCY — Three area athletes won individual events and a relay team from an area school also finished first Saturday at the annual Meet of Champions high school track and field meet.
Jonesboro's Takiria Brown won the girls' 100-meter dash in a time of 12.07 seconds and also finished third in the 200. The Lady Hurricane had a second overall state champion in Destiny Thomas, who won the shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 7 inches.
After setting the Class 5A girls' discus record earlier this month, Paragould's Olivia Hancock handily won the competition in the Meet of Champions with a throw of 137-9.
Jonesboro had other strong performances Saturday to finish third in the girls' team standings with 39 points. Conway won the team title with 63 points and Vilonia was second with 49.
The Lady Hurricane's Mary Beth Bailey finished second in the 1600 with a time of 5:17.44. Jonesboro's Elise Harris placed sixth in the 200 and seventh in the 100.
Valley View's 4x800 relay team of Kendal Minton, Emma Jarrett, Elise Knight and Hadley Rose Grisham finished second in 9:58.27. Brookland's Anna Joy Allen and Rylee Walker placed sixth in the 100 hurdles and 800, respectively.
Jonesboro won the 4x200 relay in the boys' meet as Braelyn Moore, Tyrin Ruffin, Jesse Washington and Brock McCoy turned in a time of 1:30.20. Kavon Pointer, Moore, Leonard Dinwiddie and John Paul Pickens combined to finish third in the 4x400 for the Hurricane.
The Hurricane finished ninth in the team standings with 21 points. Erik Wilson finished sixth in the triple jump while Kavon Pointer was seventh for Jonesboro.
Nettleton's Israel Malone placed second in the high jump. Manila's Connor Jackson was third in the 3200, while Blytheville's Dekari Clark placed third in the long jump.
