Mustangs gallop past Warriors

Hoxie’s Daylon Powell scrambles for yardage as Westside’s Gus Yearta (10) pursues during the third quarter of Friday’s game at Warrior Field. Hoxie won 54-29.

JONESBORO — Hoxie put on another offensive display Friday night at Warrior Field.

The Mustangs spoiled Westside’s home opener as senior quarterback Daylon Powell accounted for 424 total yards and five touchdowns in a 54-29 victory.

Hoxie (3-0) will carry a perfect record into 3A-3 play after scoring 155 points in three non-conference games. Powell amassed nearly 900 yards total offense in the first three games, accounting for 16 total touchdowns.

Friday night, Powell finished with 247 yards rushing and three touchdowns on nine carries. He was also 4-of-7 passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Both scoring passes went to Stefan Coleman, who had three receptions for 169 yards.

ShunDerrick Powell added 100 yards and three more touchdowns on 16 carries.

“We have a lot of options and we’ve got a couple other really good receivers who didn’t get any catches, and that’s just the way the coverages were rolling,” Hoxie coach Tom Sears said. “We’re fortunate to have some great kids who love to play football.”

Westside (1-2) stayed in the game for more than a half. The Warriors recovered an onside kick to start the second half and promptly drove for a score, Tyler Ray scoring on a 6-yard run with 9:45 left in the third quarter to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 28-21.

Hoxie scored the next 26 points to end any doubt about the outcome.

“We felt really good at halftime. We made a big play there at the end of the half and got the momentum,” Sears said. “We figured they would onside kick there and, sure enough, they got it. That gave them the momentum and we did a good job of turning the tables.”

ShunDerrick Powell scored on a 2-yard run to start Hoxie’s decisive surge with 5:55 left in the third quarter. The Mustangs recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Coleman sprinted past defenders to turn Daylon Powell’s pass into a 35-yard touchdown reception.

Daylon Powell followed a long run with a 1-yard touchdown carry, then added the two-point pass to give Hoxie a 48-21 lead going to the fourth quarter. ShunDerrick Powell scored the Mustangs’ final points on a 3-yard run with 7:29 left in the game. Caleb Muller scored Westside’s final touchdown and two-point conversion with 3:21 to go.

Hoxie led 14-0 after early touchdown runs of 9 and 68 yards from Daylon Powell. Westside rallied as Connor Crain scored on a 17-yard run in the first quarter and River Engle reached the end zone on a 1-yard run with 10:01 left in the second to tie the game at 14.

ShunDerrick Powell scored on a 14-yard run to return the lead to Hoxie with 7:22 left in the half. The Mustangs stunned the Warriors in the final seconds of the half, Daylon Powell finding Coleman on a 92-yard touchdown pass with five seconds left to set the halftime score at 28-14.

Westside opens 4A-3 play at home Sept. 25 against Trumann. Hoxie also has an open date this week before visiting Harrisburg on Sept. 25.
