JONESBORO — Nettleton School District athletic director Greg Rainwater has died, the district said in a social media post Saturday morning.

Rainwater, 51, had served as Nettleton’s athletic director since 2017.

“On behalf of the Nettleton School District, I am deeply saddened to inform you of the death of our colleague and friend Greg Rainwater,” Nettleton Superintendent Karen Curtner wrote in a post on the district’s Facebook page. “We were informed of his passing early this morning and specific details are as yet unavailable. I know that comforting one another in today’s world is difficult but also necessary.

“Our crisis teams are working on how best to provide support during our time of grieving. Our sympathies are with Greg’s family, friends, and all those who have worked with him in his years as teacher, coach and administrator. His integrity, kindness, and compassion will be missed.”

Rainwater was the principal at Nettleton Middle School before being selected as the district’s athletic director. His career in education also included stints coaching girls’ basketball, softball, baseball and track and field at other Northeast Arkansas schools, including Riverside and Maynard.

Rainwater also served as pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Walcott and made numerous mission trips to Uganda.
