game canceledWALNUT RIDGE — Friday night’s Walnut Ridge-East Poinsett County high school football game has been canceled due to positive cases of COVID-19 at Walnut Ridge High School.

The Lawrence County School District announced confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Walnut Ridge High School, while Walnut Ridge athletics announced the football game’s cancellation in another social media post. Walnut Ridge has an open date next week before opening conference play Sept. 25 against Palestine-Wheatley.

Ellis, Jowers lead BlazersJONESBORO — Valley View’s Peyton Ellis earned medalist honors with a 38 while Hunter Jowers fired a 39 Tuesday, leading the Blazers past Westside and Highland in boys’ high school golf at North Hills.

Luke Morgan was third individually with a 41 to round out the 118 team score for the Blazers (19-2). Highland was second at 150 and Westside third at 154.

Austin Circle (46), Issac Gooch (49) and Cooper Carter (55) combined for Highland’s team score, while Cameron Moore (49), Harry Mosier (51) and Daxton Engle (54) produced Westside’s team total.

Valley View (7-6) won the girls’ match as Emily Minton shot 43 for medalist honors. Caroline Prestidge (46) and Hannah Hyneman (51) also had scores in the Lady Blazers’ 140 total.

Gwen Figgins (50), Claire Himschoot (53) and Tressie Carter (55) combined for Highland’s 158, while Bailey Willis (49), Leighann Bush (60) and Ava Mosier (62) produced a 171 for Westside.

JHS golfers win in Wynne

WYNNE — Ro Gibson shot 37 for medalist honors Tuesday as Jonesboro won a boys’ high school golf match at The Ridges at Village Creek.

Carrington Reid (41), Win Paul Gibson (42) and Jackson Adams (43) also contributed for Jonesboro (17-5), which had a 163 team total. West Memphis finished at 222 and Wynne did not have a team score.

Jonesboro (16-4) won the girls’ match with a 154 compiled by medalist Celia Mayfield (48), Bella Kattaviravong (51) and Mya Fulkerson (55). Emma Cate Casbeer (54), Emma Miller (57) and Ella Schlenker (68) combined for Wynne’s 179 and West Memphis was third at 184.

Bearcats edge pairJONESBORO — Brookland nipped Nettleton by one stroke Tuesday in boys’ high school golf at Sage Meadows Country Club.

Landon Hendrix (39), Cole Kirby (44) and Harrison McMechen (47) produced the Bearcats’ 130 team total. Medalist Jake Daughdrill (36), Parker Clements (47) and Nathan Belk (48) combined for Nettleton’s 131.

Trumann was third with a 134 produced by Luke Montgomery (42), Cobey Riddle (43) and Connor Everhart (49).

Brookland’s Emma Butler was the girls’ medalist with a 44, followed by teammate Vivian McMechen at 48. Trumann’s Macey Powell finished at 61, while Nettleton’s Abby Owens and Trumann’s Jaycie Hall both carded a 63.
