Ellis shoots 35 to lead Blazers
JONESBORO — Valley View’s Peyton Ellis fired a two-under-par 35 on RidgePointe Country Club’s back nine Thursday to earn medalist honors and lead the Blazers past Brookland and Greene County Tech in boys’ high school golf.
The Blazers (17-2) won with a 113 team score in the count-three format. Hunter Jowers finished second individually at 36, while J.P. Matthews added a 42 to round out Valley View’s team score.
Brookland had a 122 team score as Ryan Oxford and Kole Kirby both shot 40, followed by Landon Hendrix at 42.
Christian Walls (41), Chandler Robinson (42) and Fletcher Latting (52) combined for GCT’s 135 team score.
Brookland won the girls’ match with a 139 team total produced by Vivian McMechen (45), Emma Butler (47) and Breah Bowman (47). Medalist Emily Minton finished at 43 to lead Valley View, which also counted rounds from Caroline Prestidge (51) and Kendal Minton (56) in its 150 team score.
Jonesboro golfers ease past Marion
MARION — Jonesboro defeated Marion by 20 strokes Thursday in boys’ high school golf at the Marion Golf & Athletic Club.
Ro Gibson, Carrington Reid and Braden McKinney all shot 78 for Jonesboro (15-5). Jackson Adams and Win Paul Gibson finished at 82 for the Hurricane, which had a 316 team score in the count-four format.
Marion finished at 336, led by medalist Grayson Rash’s 75.
Caroline Hughes finished at 78 to earn medalist honors as the Lady Hurricane won with a 289 team score to Marion’s 303. Mya Fulkerson shot 102 and Bella Kattaviravong 109 for Jonesboro (14-4).
Passing game carries Nettleton
JONESBORO — Two touchdown passes to Quordarious Thompson propelled Nettleton to a 14-8 victory over Pocahontas in junior high football Thursday night.
Thompson caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Maddox Hampton and a 40-yard touchdown pass from Curtez Smith. Smith, who finished with 115 yards rushing, also added a two-point conversion for Nettleton.
Kylan Shelton finished with 40 yards on eight carries for Nettleton, while Kylan Goodlow had two interceptions defensively.
EPC juniors roll past Manila
LEPANTO — Dennis Gaines ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns on four carries Thursday night, leading East Poinsett County to a 42-0 victory over Manila in junior high football.
Gaines scored on runs of 41 and 44 yards in the first half. He also returned a punt 74 yards for a third touchdown in the third quarter.
Tyrus Reel added 102 yards and a touchdown on five carries for EPC, including a 23-yard touchdown run. Cooper Argo was 6-of-11 passing for 50 yards and added 24 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Hunter Kimbrell also added a touchdown for EPC on a 35-yard run.
