Jonesboro routs Sylvan Hills

JONESBORO — Carlos Alvarado and Jorge Vargas scored three goals each Monday to lead Jonesboro to a 7-1 victory over Sylvan Hills in boys’ soccer.

The Hurricane (7-2) opened a 3-1 halftime lead. Alvarado scored first, assisted by Vargas and Alberto Gonzalez, and Clay Glomski had the next goal, assisted by Gonzalez and Alvarado. Vargas scored off Gonzalez’s assist to set the halftime score.

In the second half, Alvarado scored off Jose Rodriguez’s assist; Vargas scored off a corner kick; Vargas scored on another assist by Gonzalez; and Alvarado scored on a penalty kick when Vargas was fouled.

Ryan Rouse had two saves in goal for the Hurricane.

Lady Bearcats win 4A-3 opener

BROOKLAND — Livvie Campbell scored four goals Monday night to help Brookland open 4A-3 conference play with an 8-0 rout of Southside in girls’ soccer.

Emma Bassett added two goals for Brookland (6-2, 1-0 conference). Abigail Brookreson and Mallory Bristow scored one goal each.

Brooklyn Fountain had two saves in goal for Brookland.

Tuckerman edges Melbourne

TUCKERMAN — Makaylie Gist earned the pitching victory and added three hits at the plate as Tuckerman edged Melbourne 10-8 in 2A-2 softball Monday.

Gist struck out 11 batters for the Lady Bulldogs (12-3, 6-0 conference). Kenzie Soden closed the game in the circle for Tuckerman.

Gracie Smith and Shanley Williams had two hits each. Smith, Gist, Anna Fortenberry and Sophie Lancaster all hit home runs.

Blazers fall in tourney final

BATESVILLE — Valley View suffered its first loss Saturday evening in the championship game of the Pioneer Classic, falling 7-5 to tournament host Batesville in high school baseball.

Carter Saulsbury was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored for the Blazers (15-1). Slade Caldwell hit an RBI triple while Carson Tosh added a hit and two RBI for Valley View, which visits Westside for a 4A-3 doubleheader today.

Starting pitcher Barrett Brooks pitched four innings for Valley View, giving up three hits and two earned runs (three total). Jackson Stotts (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound while pitching two innings, yielding four hits and four runs.

Valley View reached the finals with a 9-4 victory over Gosnell in the semifinals. Tyler Hoskins had a hit and drove in five runs to lead the Blazers.

Caldwell and Wil French had a hit and scored two runs each. Saulsbury, Tosh and Carson Turley each added one hit.

Eli Crecelius (1-0) earned the victory while pitching four innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out seven. Preston Watlington pitched three innings for the save, yielding five hits and three runs while striking out three.

Raiders finish 1-2 in tourney

BATESVILLE — Nettleton finished 1-2 in the Pioneer Classic high school baseball tournament over the weekend.

The Raiders started the tournament Friday with a 15-2 loss to Gosnell. Landen Wrinkles was 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Gosnell, while Daniel Sullivan was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Cooper Pieri was 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Kyle Tolley and Nathan Belk both finished 2-for-3 to lead the Raiders.

Nettleton bounced back Saturday with a 9-4 victory over Vilonia. Christion Cleary picked up the win on the mound with four innings pitched, allowing eight hits and four runs.

Cleary was also 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Landon Webb was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI; Tolley was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI; and Seth Bishop added a double and two RBI.

Ethan Duffel and Jacob Tarpley had a hit and an RBI each. Kenwarren McShan was also in the hit column for the Raiders.

Nettleton finished the tournament with a 12-6 loss to Pocahontas.

Webb was 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI, while Tolley homered and drove in two runs. Belk was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

CJ Palmer was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Pocahontas. Connor Baker was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI; Michael Martens was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI; and Dawson Chester, Hunter Singley, Carter Privett and Zane Hibbard had a hit and an RBI each.
