JONESBORO — Jonesboro had little trouble in the first round of the Class 5A state baseball tournament Thursday, routing Sylvan Hills 9-1 at Woodland Field.
The Hurricane (26-5) will play Texarkana, a 2-1 winner over Greenbrier, in a quarterfinal game today at 12:30 p.m. Jonesboro rolled past Texarkana 17-8 when the teams played a little over two months ago at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.
Jonesboro put up three runs in the first inning and added three more in the third for a 6-0 lead. After Sylvan Hills scored its only run in the top of the fourth, the Hurricane plated one in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth to close the scoring.
Jake Henry Williams pitched five innings for the victory, striking out six batters while giving up one run and six hits. Drew Batson and Lance Davis pitched one inning each in relief.
Josh Hyneman was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Hurricane offensively. Ty Rhoades was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI; Rhett Hosman and Will Barre' hit doubles; Williams had a hit and an RBI; Sawyer Bentley added a hit and an RBI; and Brennan Payne had a hit and an RBI.
All four quarterfinal games will be played at Woodland Field today, starting with Greene County Tech and Russellville at 10 a.m. After the Jonesboro-Texarkana game, Van Buren and Marion will meet at 3 p.m., followed by Greenwood and Batesville at 5:30.
Van Buren defeated Lake Hamilton 7-2 and Greenwood ousted Sheridan 11-3 in the last two games Thursday at Nettleton.
SILOAM SPRINGS — Jonesboro scored five goals in the first half Thursday and went on to defeat Beebe 7-0 in the Class 5A boys’ state soccer tournament.
The Hurricane (18-2) advanced with its 13th consecutive victory, including the last nine by shutout. Jonesboro plays Russellville, a 3-2 winner over Lake Hamilton, in the quarterfinals today at noon.
Jose Rodriguez opened the scoring with the first of his three goals, scoring on a cross from Alberto Gonzalez. Rodriguez scored again on a through ball from Jorge Vargas.
Vargas scored on a through ball from Brayan Rivera, Rodriguez put the ball in the net on a header, and Eder Leal scored on a cross from Vargas. Vargas scored twice on steals in the second half.
Ryan Rouse finished with two saves in goal.
Jonesboro also advanced on the girls' bracket Thursday after defeating Sylvan Hills 3-2 in overtime. The Lady Hurricane will play Greenbrier today at 2 p.m.
Nettleton exited the boys' tournament with a 3-1 loss to Little Rock Christian.
MOUNTAIN HOME — Greene County Tech advanced in the Class 5A state softball tournament Thursday with a 15-4 rout of Little Rock Christian.
The Lady Eagles will play Hot Springs Lakeside today at noon.
Beebe defeated Paragould 7-6 in another first-round game Thursday.
MORRILTON — Brookland edged Dardanelle 4-3 Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A state softball tournament while Valley View fell 4-3 to Farmington.
The Lady Bearcats (23-9) advance to play Nashville in the quarterfinals today at 10 a.m.
Bella Byerly belted a home run while driving in two runs for Brookland. Taylor Reed had a single and an RBI; Madison Wooldridge was 2-for-4 and scored once; Gracie Davis had a hit and scored a run; and Helena Garcia doubled and scored a run.
Farmington (26-3) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to eliminate Valley View (28-6).
The Lady Blazers finished with two hits, one of which was Lexi Davis' solo home run. Grace Butler had an RBI single for Valley View, which scored in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
Lady Blazer pitcher Riley Smith worked around 10 hits, giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out two batters.
Westside was eliminated with a 6-0 loss to Star City.
4A girls soccer
HARRISON — Valley View routed eStem 9-0 Thursday in the Class 4A girls’ state soccer tournament.
The Lady Blazers advance to play Dardanelle, a 3-0 winner over Bauxite, in the quarterfinals today at 2 p.m.
Brookland also won Thursday, rolling past Hamburg 6-0. The Lady Bearcats will play Harrison today at 10 a.m.
In other games involving area girls’ teams, Warren defeated Wynne 6-1 and Pulaski Academy beat Westside 8-0.
4A boys soccer
HARRISON — Valley View and Brookland posted victories Thursday in the Class 4A boys' state soccer tournament.
Valley View, the North No. 1 seed, rolled past Star City 7-3. The Blazers play Berryville today at 4 p.m.
Brookland advanced with a 2-1 victory over Hamburg. The Bearcats battle Nashville today at noon.
Warren defeated Westside 6-0 in another first-round game Thursday.
MORRILTON — Pocahontas roared past Bauxite 12-0 Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A state baseball tournament.
The Redskins (23-9) advance to play Farmington in the quarterfinals today at noon.

ASHDOWN — Walnut Ridge reached the Class 3A baseball quarterfinals Thursday with a 6-0 victory over Camden Harmony Grove in the first round.
The Bobcats advance to play Danville, a 6-2 winner over Palestine-Wheatley, today at 10 a.m.
ASHDOWN — Hoxie moved into the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state softball tournament with Thursday's 9-2 rout of McGehee.
The Lady Mustangs play Booneville today at 3 p.m.
Also Thursday, Smackover eliminated Harrisburg 4-0 and Ashdown defeated Rivercrest 7-2.
CARLISLE — Buffalo Island Central defeated Conway St. Joseph 9-5 Thursday in the Class 2A state baseball tournament.
The Mustangs will play Woodlawn today at 3 p.m.
South Side Bee Branch eliminated Rector 11-1 .
CARLISLE — Tuckerman advanced in the Class 2A state softball tournament Thursday with a 9-3 victory over Riverside.
The Lady Bulldogs advance to face Horatio in the quarterfinals today at 10 a.m.
East Poinsett County exited the tournament with an 8-0 loss to Quitman.
