JONESBORO — Hurricane Laura is causing changes in the first week of area high school and junior high football.

Valley View’s senior high game scheduled Friday at Ozark has been canceled, school officials said Wednesday. Jonesboro announced that its season opener at Little Rock Catholic has been pushed back a day, with kickoff at War Memorial Stadium now scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.

Valley View head coach Sean Cockrell said school officials decided to cancel the trip to Ozark because of the impending threat from Laura, which is expected to start moving through the state this evening.

“With the possibility of high winds and all that, we just thought it was best at this time,” said Cockrell, whose team faced a trip of 200-plus miles to Ozark.

Valley View scheduled Ozark earlier this month after a game against Manila was canceled. The Blazers have an open date Sept. 18 and Cockrell said they might schedule a game that Friday night.

“We’re looking at that now,” he said. “That’s a definite possibility if somebody is open.”

Valley View athletic director Tommy Fowler said kickoff for the school’s home junior high football game tonight against Gosnell has been moved up to 5 p.m. because of impending weather.

The Jonesboro-Little Rock Catholic game has been rescheduled to the original Friday playing date because of the storm. Jonesboro head coach Randy Coleman said War Memorial Stadium had wanted to move the game to today in order to have more time to clean the facility before Saturday night’s Benton-Bryant game.
