The Lawrence County Election Commission spent last week training students from Hillcrest, Sloan-Hendrix and Walnut Ridge high schools to serve as election officials in the upcoming General Election.

“We are very excited to have these students involved with all aspects of early voting, absentee, election day and election night procedures,” Election Commission Chair Judy Verkler said.

Nine students from Walnut Ridge High School participated in the training. There were 10 Sloan-Hendrix High School students who received training, three who did so via Zoom.

In addition, five students from Hillcrest High School completed the training.

“It was the second time attending a training for three of them,” Verkler said. “They worked the 2019 Hillcrest School Election.”

She said for the General Election, the students will have the opportunity to assist with the extra offsite early voting days, as well. One student will also be helping with absentee ballots.

“All of the students seemed to show a real interest,” she said.

Verkler expressed her appreciation to the school counselors for assisting with the student pollworker project.

“We want to thank the counselors of these schools for taking the time out of their busy schedule to recruit some very bright and talented students,” she said.
