DeVoe L. Manning, 69 of Dixon, Ill., died Monday May 31, 2021, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born Aug. 27, 1951, in Walnut Ridge, the son of Earl Edward and Izeal Oweda (Cline) Manning. DeVoe received his Bachlor’s degree from Peru State College in Peru, Neb., and his Master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.

He taught English, Speech and Drama at Dixon High School from 1973 until his retirement in 2005. DeVoe was the Drama Director for the fall plays and spring musicals for many years at DHS.

In his free time, DeVoe enjoyed raising and racing pigeons. In 2020, he finished seventh nationally in the American Racing Pigeon Union’s Young Bird Champion Loft division.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Norma Foshee and Connie Van Horne; and two brothers, Terral and Randy Manning.

DeVoe is survived by three sisters, Karen (Mike) Rude of Sterling, Ill., Kim King of Oregon, and Kelli (Shannon) Miller of Ward; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by longtime family friend, Terry Macholan and his family, from Papillion, Neb.

It was DeVoe’s wish that his body be donated for scientific study through the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon.
