Stanley Eugene “Stan” Smith, 78, of Hoxie, died Nov. 9, 2020, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge.

Born June 12, 1942, in Rose Bud, he was the son of Walter Harla and Zora Gladys Ponder Smith. He was raised in the Egypt area. He enlisted in the National Guard, and served eight years in the Army National Reserve. Stan had a Doctor degree in Theology and was a Baptist preacher, evangelist, active in a Christian quartet, and an insurance salesman. He loved to preach God’s word and sing hymns, and study genealogy and Indian ancestry. He enjoyed being a fisherman in the outdoors.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Juanita Clairday Smith; and his second wife, Hazel Rutledge Smith.

Survivors include two daughters, Cara (Jeff) McConnell of Michigan, Teri (Jere) Jones of Pocahontas; four grandchildren, Dana Marie (Bryan) Cook of Memphis, Jonathan (Cassidy) Jones of Walnut Ridge, Joshua Jones of Pocahontas and Caitlin McConnell of Michigan; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Gilpin of Broken Arrow, Okla.; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service was Friday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge with Bro. Derek Collins, Bro. Roger Fred and Bro. Jonathan Jones officiating. Interment was in Lawrence Memorial Park under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.
