Pictures of the Past

The Portia High School faculty for the 1927-1928 school year were (front, from left): Taylor Davis, assistant principal; William Scott Miller, principal; W. Warren Miller, teacher; (back) Pearl Johnson and Pauline Watson, teachers. Mr. Davis was also a Church of Christ preacher for many years. William Scott Miller was later elected the Lawrence County Assessor, and Warren Miller was later a principal-teacher for the Walnut Ridge School system. Pearl Johnson Essary became the postmaster for Arkansas State College in Jonesboro. In 2019, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation established a scholarship in Mrs. Essary’s honor. Pauline Watson Mathis and her husband later lived in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the U.S. Census Bureau. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
