Rainfall totals for Lawrence County the past week averaged eight to 10 inches, with some parts of the county recording 10 to 15 inches. Dozens of homes are underwater, mainly in the Clover Bend, Black Rock and Portia areas. Both the Sloan-Hendrix School District and the Imboden Area Charter School missed days due to flooded roads.
The Lawrence County 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Program team took top honors in the state contest that was held in Benton on Friday. Members of the winning senior WHEP team include: Derek French, Jonathon Vankirk, Dillon Nelson and Coy Yasler, all of Hoxie High School. Along with winning as a team, two of the team members placed as high individuals. Nelson placed fourth as an individual, and Yasler earned the first place high individual award.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys track team won the 2A-3 District Meet at Paragould. Bobcat Eric Huff earned high-point honors. This is the first track team WRHS has fielded in over 20 years. Larry Treadway is the coach.

Amy Renee Broyles has been named valedictorian of the River Valley High School Class of 2001. Salutatorian of the class is Philip Craig Duncan. Honor graduates include Adam Huskey, Jeffery Massey, Shauna Wilson, Lee Mooneyhan, Trey Highfield, Chandra Thomas and Jared Smith.
Jerry Bassett, age 88, of Walnut Ridge, died Thursday. Bassett, who served as Walnut Ridge postmaster for over 39 years, was also a former county official, instrumental in the industrial development of Lawrence County and was a significant supporter of the WRHS athletic program and Boy Scouting, and an active member of First United Methodist Church.
David Foley, Black Rock High School principal, has announced the honor graduates of the class of 2001. Valedictorian is Briana Bopp and salutatorian is Pam Richmond. Honor graduates include Stephanie Moody, Charla Jones, Rachael Croom and RebeKah Segraves.
State Rep. Don House of Walnut Ridge has announced that the Lynn Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $50,000 grant from the state legislature to build a new fire station. House noted that Lynn is the only fire department in his district that does not have its own fire station, having recently lost the lease on its current building.
Linda C. Wallis, a sixth-grade teacher at Sloan-Hendrix School, has been selected to attend Texas A&M University NASA Education Training.
Baseball legend Johnny Sain and his wife of 29 years, Mary Ann, of Oakbrook, Ill., formerly of Walnut Ridge, visited Northeast Arkansas and his children over the past few weeks. A rookie in 1942 for the Boston Braves, he was the first big-league pitcher to face Jackie Robinson, and pitched Babe Ruth his last ball. Sain was named to the All-Star Team in 1947, 1948 and 1953. An excellent hitting pitcher (.245), Sain averaged .346 in 1947, the franchise record for the highest batting average for a pitcher in a single season. Sain also had a lengthy career as a pitching coach and is considered by many to be the finest pitching coach in baseball history. Sixteen of his pitching prodigies were 20-game winners. His three prize pupils from the Yankees were Whitey Ford, Ralph Terry and Jim Bouton. He also coached for the Twins, the Tigers and the White Sox and has nine World Series rings. Sain was the Chevrolet dealer in Walnut Ridge from 1952 to 1972.

Carl A. “Cap” Phillips of Walnut Ridge was recognized with the top departmental award in agriculture business at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
Rainfall in Lawrence County in April was 14.32 inches, making it the wettest April in history, according to The Times Dispatch records. The previous record was April 1927, when 14.30 inches were noted.

Greg Elders and Bobby Brand, both seniors at Walnut Ridge High School, have been named as National Merit Scholarship winners.
Mrs. Ben (Jeanette) Bush was presented a Life Membership to PTA on behalf of the Walnut Ridge Parent-Teacher Association recently. Mrs. Bush is a WRHS graduate, and she spent 32 years as a public school teacher. For some 28 years she taught senior English at WRHS.
Honor graduates for the 1981 graduating class at Clover Bend include: Cheryl McCampbell, valedictorian, and Angie Fowler, salutatorian.
Leona B. Mize was presented a plaque by J.F. Sloan III, chairman of the city water board, during a dinner in her honor recently. The plaque recognized her “33 years of outstanding and dedicated service as an employee of the City Water Works.”

George Prater, principal of Hoxie High School, has announced that Diane Walter has been named valedictorian of the graduating class at Hoxie High School. Pam Pratt has been named salutatorian.
Bill Maxwell, superintendent of the Black Rock Schools, is the new president of the Lawrence County Teachers Association.

Three girls are honor graduates at Walnut Ridge High School, announced Principal Joe Spades. Co-valedictorians are Barbara Arnold and Sarah Hatcher. Salutatorian is Shirley Johnson.
Francis Cate, superintendent of Clover Bend Schools, announces the following honor graduates: Lonnie Gilbreth has been selected valedictorian. Sue Pratt was chosen as salutatorian.
Destructive winds, accompanied by a violent hail storm and a heavy downpour of rain, hit Walnut Ridge at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, causing wide-spread damage. Although damage was reported throughout the city, the main path of the storm was through the western and northern portions.
Insurance agents reported more than 300 damage claims yesterday afternoon and one estimate of damage made by an agent was $75,000.
