The Hoxie Mustangs played a strong second half to defeat the Gosnell Pirates 55-45 in senior boys basketball action on Thursday at Mustang Gym.

Walnut Ridge dominated the third quarter against Harrisburg and coasted to an easy 63-41 win over the Hornets on Jan. 11 at Walnut Ridge’s Terry Belcher Gymnasium. The win kept the Bobcats perfect in 3A-3 conference play with a 7-0 record and improved their overall mark to 12-1.

Hoxie is the host school for the 2022 Lawrence County Basketball Tournament. Boys and girls teams from fifth through seventh grade, as well as junior high and senior high, will compete for titles.

Lawrence County teams wrapped up play in the NEA Invitational Basketball Tournament as both the Hoxie Lady Mustangs and Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats suffered quarterfinal losses on Dec. 27.

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs rolled to a 63-37 win over Searcy in the NEA Invitational Tournament on Wednesday at First National Bank Area in Jonesboro. Hoxie’s Jaecie Brown tied the tournament’s single-game scoring record for five-on-five girls with 42 points.

Hoxie High School senior Jace Benesch signed his letter of intent to play football at the University of Central Arkansas on Dec. 15 at Hoxie’s Mustang Gymnasium.

Corning’s Lady Bobcats used a fourth-quarter rally to edge the Hillcrest Lady Screamin’ Eagles 58-57 in senior girls basketball Thursday night at Lynn.

The 62nd annual Williams Baptist University High School Basketball Tournament concluded with a pair of barnburners in Saturday’s championship games. Walnut Ridge claimed the boys title by edging Sloan-Hendrix 53-52, while Marmaduke defeated Tuckerman 55-53 in the girls final.

Fourteen members of the Hoxie senior high football team have received post-season honors following the 2021 season. In addition, Mustang head coach Tom Sears has been named 3A Coach of the Year and is an All-Starr nominee.

After a one-year hiatus, Williams Baptist University is hosting its 62nd Annual High School Basketball Tournament at the Southerland-Mabee Center on the WBU campus.

The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds defeated the Highland Rebels 54-45 in senior boys basketball on Nov. 23 at Imboden. The Greyhounds improved to 9-1 on the season with the win.

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats went on the road to face the undefeated McGehee Owls in the first round of the 3A state football playoffs Friday night. The Owls, last year’s runners-up in 3A, were too much for the Bobcats, coasting to a 60-12 victory.

Several members of the Hoxie senior high volleyball team have been honored for their play during the 2021 season. Ellery Gillham, Kailey Moody, Cara Forrester and Chloe Prater were named to the 3A-Northeast All-Conference team, while Bailey Prater received Honorable Mention recognition.

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs fell to defending state champion Hackett in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Volleyball Tournament on Oct. 27 in Paris. The Lady Hornets defeated Hoxie 25-23, 25-15, 25-8.

The Walnut Ridge senior high volleyball team returned to the 3A State Tournament this season. The Lady Bobcats’ season came to an end with a first-round loss to Harding Academy on Oct. 26 in Paris.

The Manila Lions jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first half and went on to defeat the Walnut Ridge Bobcats, 39-14, in 3A-3 football action Friday night at Manila.

Hoxie’s Seth Brooks accounted for six touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 49-6 rout of Manila in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Manila. The senior running back ran for four touchdowns and was on the receiving end of two scoring passes from quarterback Cade Forrester, all in the first half.

Hoxie linebacker Jace Benesch returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns and the Mustang defense recorded its second consecutive shutout in a 46-0 win over the Piggott Mohawks in front of a homecoming crowd Friday night at Crider Field.

Walnut Ridge won the annual battle of the Bobcats, defeating 3A-3 Conference rival Corning 42-7 Friday night at Corning.

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Cave City 3-2 in the volleyball regular season finale on Oct. 12 at Cave City. The Lady Mustangs completed an undefeated season in 3A-Northeast Conference play with a 14-0 record and are 20-1 overall.
