Hoxie quarterback Daylon Powell accounted for five touchdowns in leading the Mustangs to a 54-29 win over the Westside Warriors in senior football action Friday night at Westside.
The Mustangs got off to a fast start with two early scores. Daylon Powell scored on runs on nine and 68 yards to put the Mustangs ahead 14-0 in the first quarter.
Westside fought back to tie the game at 14-14 on Connor Crain’s 18-yard run late in the first period and River Engle’s one-yard run in the second quarter.
Hoxie regained the lead on ShunDerrick Powell’s 13-yard run later in the second period. Stefan Coleman kicked his third extra-point of the evening to give the Mustangs a 21-14 advantage. Hoxie struck for a big play to end the half when Daylon Powell passed to Coleman for a 92-yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the period. Coleman again added the PAT to send the Mustangs into the locker room with a 28-14 lead.
Hoxie was set to receive the second-half kickoff, but Westside recovered an onside kick to gain possession. The Warriors took advantage of the break, engineering a scoring drive capped by Tyler Ray’s six-yard touchdown run, bringing Westside to within 28-21.
That would be as close as the Warriors would get, as Hoxie reeled off 26 unanswered points to put the game away. ShunDerrick Powell scored on a two-yard run to put the Mustangs ahead 34-21. Coleman hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Daylon Powell to stretch Hoxie’s lead to 40-21. Daylon Powell scored on a one-yard keeper, then passed to Coleman for the two-point conversion, as the third quarter ended with the Mustangs in command 48-21.
ShunDerrick Powell scored his third touchdown of the night on a four-yard run for Hoxie’s final points. Westside added a late score on Caleb Muller’s nine-yard run, followed by a two-point conversion, to set the final score.
Daylon Powell completed four-of-seven passes, for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed nine times for 238 yards and three scores.
ShunDerrick Powell finished with 104 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Carson Cooper had 14 yards on three carries. Cade Forrester finished with nine yards on two attempts, and Coleman had one carry for seven yards.
Coleman had three catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Beasley had one catch for nine yards.
On defense, Jace Benesch had five tackles, seven assists and one tackle for loss. Mario Armstrong had four tackles and two assists, and Xander Ball finished with two tackles and one assist. Peyton Jamison and Cooper Spradlin each had one tackle and three assists. Chase Guthrie had a tackle and two assists, and Noah Morse had one tackle and one assist. Jalen Chapell, Hunter Rickey and Nick Staffa each assisted on a tackle.
Sam Turner recovered two fumbles, while Davie Powell and Seth Brooks each had one recovery. Forrester had a pass interception.
Hoxie is now 3-0 on the season. The Mustangs have this week off before opening 3A-3 conference play on Sept. 25 at Harrisburg.
