Golfers at Hillcrest High School recently completed a successful season on the links in 2020.
The Hillcres boys team of Bryson Doyle, Landon Wright, Clayton Rose, Brayden Oliver and Talmadge Smith won the 1A-3 Conference Tournament at Newport, which qualified them for the state tournament. The Screamin’ Eagles went on to finish 12th at the 1A State Tournament, held Oct. 7 at the Glenwood Country Club.
“We had a very good showing in our conference tournament,” said Hillcrest golf coach Andy Durham. “Our consistency throughout the year was up and down, so I didn’t know what to expect, but the boys played well at the right time.”
“We struggled a little at the state tournament. However, we had three freshmen and one junior competing. They gained a ton of experience seeing what State Golf was like. If we stick with it and compete, I think the future is bright for these guys,” added Durham.
On the girls side, Molly Emison qualified for state by virtue of her performance in the conference tournament. Emison finished 12th out of 47 competitors at the state meet.
“I was really proud of her. She struck the ball really well and hit several good shots. She missed All-State honors by a few strokes. She has come a long way since her freshman year. I expect her to be back in state next year,” said Durham.
