The Hoxie junior high football team completed an undefeated season with Thursday’s win over Walnut Ridge. The junior Mustangs end with 7-0 overall record and are 3A-3 Conference champions with a 4-0 league mark. It is the first conference title for the junior Mustangs since 2011.
“We have 26 players, and they all worked very hard for us to be undefeated,” said head coach Chris Wagoner.
Wagoner noted that preparing a team during the COVID pandemic presented some unique obstacles.
“Working out with facemasks and maintaining social distancing guidelines was challenging at first, but they soon became routine,” said the coach. “Normally, we have “team camps” during the summer which serve as a preleude to fall practice. We weren’t able to have those this year.”
Hoxie began the season with wins over Mountain View and Westside before beginning conference play. The junior Mustangs recorded league victories over Harrisburg, Palestine-Wheatley, Piggott, Osceola and Walnut Ridge. Games against Corning and Manila were canceled.
