Daylon Powell tossed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Stefan Coleman to give the Mustangs a 54-48 lead over Cave City on Hoxie’s second overtime possession Friday night at Crider Field. Hoxie’s defense then held the Cavemen on downs to preserve the win.
The game-winning toss capped a big night for Daylon Powell, the Mustangs’ senior quarterback. He rushed for 164 yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries and completed five-of-six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Daylon Powell gave the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead with a four-yard run in the first quarter. Cave City responded with two consecutive scores to take a 14-7 advantage. Hoxie’s ShunDerrick Powell tied the game on a 76-yard burst with 1:31 to play in the period.
The Mustangs regained the lead on Daylon Powell’s 10-yard run in the second quarter. Cave City answered with a touchdown and PAT to move into a 21-20 lead. Daylon Powell scored on an 11-yard run, followed by the two-point conversion, to put Hoxie back in front 28-21 at the end of the first half.
The teams continued to exchange the lead in the second half. Cave City scored on a 13-yard pass play and added a two-point conversion to take a 29-28 lead early in the period.
The Mustangs leap-frogged back in front on ShunDerrick Powell’s 11-yard run later in the third quarter. The lead lasted until the Cavemen scored on a 31-yard run to take a 35-34 advantage to close out the quarter.
The Cavemen stretched their lead to 42-34 with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Daylon Powell broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run with 3:37 to play in the game. He then added the two-point conversion to knot the game at 42-42.
Neither team scored during the remainder of the period, sending the contest to overtime.
Cave City opened on offense in the first overtime period and scored on a two-yard run. Hoxie prevented the conversion, leaving the Cavemen with a 48-42 lead.
Hoxie answered on Daylon Powell’s one-yard keeper to tie the game at 48-48, but the Mustangs couldn’t convert the two-point try and the game moved on to the second overtime period, where the Mustangs prevailed.
ShunDerrick Powell was also big for the Mustangs, finishing with 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Coleman added four yards on two carries.
Coleman led Hoxie’s receivers with two receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Cade Forrester caught two passes for 31 yards, and ShunDerrick Powell had one reception for eight yards.
Hoxie is at home again this week, hosting the Mountain View Yellowjackets at Crider Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
